Under general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services, the Lead Groundsworker plans, trains, coordinates, and inspects the work of groundsworkers; oversees and assists in side-by-side work of up to ten employees engaged in general grounds maintenance work or grounds projects. Oversees two to five employees performing athletic field maintenance, and provides leadership for grounds maintenance in the housing complex. The Lead Groundsworker is assigned to areas of the campus grounds and may assist in more specialized work such as: equipment operation, irrigation repairs, tree trimming and athletic facility preparation such as lining fields.
FLSA Non-Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is non-exempt, (eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Work Hours Monday - Friday; 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Must be able to work alternate work week and/or work schedules, as necessary. Position works on-site during COVID-19 campus closure.

• Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.
• General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
• Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others
• Provide training, interpret policies and explain methods and procedures
• Inspect and evaluate the work of others
• Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
• Perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.
• Two years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.
• Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license.
Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating and caring for landscapes and grounds, including high performance sports fields, both turf and synthetic.
Experience with operating and maintaining equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, edgers, weed trimmers and lining equipment.
Familiarity with PC applications such as word processing, email, spreadsheets, and a computerized maintenance management system.
Knowledge and experience in repairs, maintenance and operation of irrigation systems, including computerized irrigation control systems.
Strong knowledge in athletic field maintenance, artificial turf maintenance, lining and preparing athletic fields and facilities for events.
Conditions of Employment
A background check must be satisfactorily completed post-conditional offer.
1. Knowledge in the proper maintenance practices for high performance turf and sports fields, including synthetic turf.
2. Experience in event preparation, field layout and lining procedures for various sports.
3. Three years of experience acting in a lead capacity for a Grounds Department in an institutional setting
4. State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation, Qualified Applicators' Certificate Category B
Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs. maximum
Ability to wear appropriate PPE
• Valid driver's license and maintenance of good driving record, for occasional driving per the Essential Functions of the position.
