The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is offering an excellent career opportunity for qualified individuals interested in the Pathology Supervisor position. The department currently has one (1) vacancy in the Pathology Laboratory located at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center (CCRMC) located in Martinez, CA. The incumbent may occasionally be required to travel to various locations within Contra Costa County.

Under general direction, the Pathology Supervisor supervises, and trains staff assigned to the Pathology Laboratory, and coordinates the operation of the pathology program services at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center; performs related duties as required.

  • Overseeing proficiency testing and proctoring CAP Pap proficiency testing
  • Assisting Laboratory Director in validating new tests and new laboratory equipment
  • Involvement in training and orienting new lab technicians, Histotechnicians, and cytotechnologists

Typical Tasks
  • Completes monthly schedule and supervises daily assignments of pathology laboratory staff
  • Plans, assigns, directs, reviews and evaluates the work of Senior Cytotechnologists, Cytotechnologists, Histotechnicians, Pathology Technicians, and Laboratory Technicians
  • Updates the Pathology Manual annually
  • Establishes and maintains an ongoing quality assurance program
  • Establishes and audits appropriate pathology laboratory monitors
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual quality assurance reports
  • Maintains quality control policies and procedure manuals for all equipment and tests
  • Coordinates and monitors pathology laboratory quality control and proficiency testing programs
  • Maintains quality control files and peer group comparison programs
  • Revises laboratory reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Monitors cancellation and result editing for compliance
  • Assists in solving quality control problems
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance and service contracts
  • Reviews and maintains equipment maintenance records
  • Performs work as a general Histotechnician as assigned
  • Orders and processes invoices for supplies, reagents, and minor equipment
  • Develops and tracks orientation programs for new Cytotechnologists, Histotechnicians, Pathology Technicians, and Laboratory Technicians
  • Develops and administers periodic competency evaluations for Senior Cytotechnologists, Cytotechnologists, Histotechnicians, Pathology Technicians, and Laboratory Technicians
  • Develops, monitors, and provides in-service training for Senior Cytotechnologists, Cytotechnologists, Histotechnicians, Pathology Technicians, Laboratory Technicians and staff as required
  • Ensures that all staff has adequate and specific training according to State of California and The Joint Commission regulations
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

Certificate Required: Possession and maintenance of a valid Histotechnician certificate issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Experience: Five (5) years of full-time, or its equivalent, experience as a Histotechnician

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.


A COMPLETED SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE IS REQUIRED AND YOU MUST ATTACH PROOF OF THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATION AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

Selection Process

2. Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

3. Training and Experience Evaluation: Consists of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire. (Weighted 100%)

4. Candidates must receive a score of at least 70, which may be an adjusted score, in order to be ranked on the employment list.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
