    The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department ( PARD ) provides protects and preserves a park system that promotes quality recreational, cultural and outdoor experiences for the Austin community.

    Application Instructions:
    • 16 and 17 year old applicants require parent signatures on the applicant paperwork.
    • After the interview, applicants will complete preliminary paperwork. If given a contingent job offer, the offer will be conditional on taking and passing 40 hours of Lifeguard Life Skills training.
    • Returning Swim Coaches will be required to take 16 hours of training instead of the 40 hours required for new swim coaches.
    • Applicants will be required to show I-9 documents to verify proof of citizenship if given a conditional job offer based on completing the training.     • Swim Coaches must have reliable transportation to get to and from work on your assigned work hours.

    • Attend mandatory Aquatic Division Orientation.
    • Attend mandatory paid in-service meetings.
    • Report to work on time for assigned shift(s); and remain free from being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
    • Wear assigned Aquatics Division staff uniform only while on duty.
    • Be able to work weekdays, weekends and holidays; and willing to substitute for others.
    • Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties during assigned shift(s).

    Work Schedule/Location:
    • Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.
    • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    Physical Requirements :
    • Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
    • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant's needs and safety issues.

    Multiple Work Sites:
    • This position will require traveling to multiple sites throughout the work day.

Pay Range
$16.50 - $17.00 per hour.

Days and Hours
  • Work shifts will vary, up to 40 hours per week.

Applicants must take and pass Certification Training offered by the Parks and Recreation Department. Certifications include:
  • Star Fish Aquatics Water Safety Educator;
  • StarGuard Lifeguard
  • CPR for Adult, Child & Infant;
  • First Aid.
  • Must take and pass the Parks and Recreation Department CPR City Skills Test before hire.

No teaching experience required for this position.


Other preferred experience:
  • Team player with excellent customer service skills and schedule flexibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to multitask, is preferred.
  • Experience communicating information clearly and concisely in person, by phone, etc., while exercising tact, patience and discretion in a professional demeanor.
  • Great people skills.
  • Have the ability to travel to more than one work location.

  • Instructs various levels of classes, pre-school through Community Water Safety.
  • If qualified, may work as a Lifeguard or a Head Lifeguard.
  • Must be able to verbally communicate with public and staff effectively.
  • Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
  • Plans, organizes and leads program activities.
  • Maintains, inventories and cares for City property and equipment.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of materials and supplies necessary to conduct programs.
