The Microbiology Support Technician provides support for the set-up and delivery of student laboratory sections for the department's microbiology course offerings.


Laboratory course preparation: provide and maintain all materials necessary to execute instructional laboratory course sections for departmental Microbiology course offerings and related, e.g., Hematology. This preparation primarily includes the following tasks and responsibilities:
* Preparation of all media, reagents and solutions used in lab exercises. Amounts and details for each required for individual labs will primarily involve consultation with the faculty and, at times, teaching assistants.
* Proper handling, storage, and maintenance of microbial cultures; periodic evaluation of viability, purity and traits for microbial stocks, including antibiotic sensitivities for bacterial cultures; and proper preparation for -80 C storage and resuscitation of stocks thereof.
* Providing media, reagents, solutions, and supplies needed for lab exercises and experiments into lab classrooms before the start of scheduled labs as part of lab set up.
* Maintenance, stocking and proper labeling of all chemicals, solutions and reagents in the Microbiology Suite and adjoining lab classrooms.
* Following and performing established safety procedures for storage and disposal of biological and chemical wastes, including disinfection of equipment and surfaces contaminated with microorganisms, as needed.
* Maintenance of an up to date inventory of consumable lab materials and supplies.
* Ordering of all necessary lab materials and supplies, i.e. cultures, media, and reagents.
* Care and routine maintenance of equipment used for labs, including but not limited to, microscopes, incubators, refrigerators and freezers, biosafety cabinets, and water baths.
* Preparation of reference materials for labs (e.g., slides, diagrams, pictures, posters, articles, etc.)
* Maintenance of the general order of the Microbiology Suite and neighboring lab classrooms, such as clean workspaces, and eliminating expired media from the cold room.

Other support activities:
* Compliance with mandatory trainings provided by the CSU system.
* Submission of and familiarity with Student Accident Injury Reports.
* Maintenance of microbial and chemical inventories, including locations, documents such as MSDS information, and expiration dates for chemicals and stocks.
* Conducting periodic inspections and hazard assessments of the Microbiology Suite.
* Assisting faculty, staff and students with autoclaving and biohazardous waste disposal and other needs appropriate to support the Microbiology Suite and Microbiology undergraduate and graduate students.
* Training and supervision of work study students and student assistants in basic duties and safety.
* Service as a Biological Sciences Department representative on the College of Science Safety Committee may be needed.

Instructional support: Preparation of materials for lab practicals, assisting teaching associates and faculty as requested in preparing labs and providing needed support during delivery of lab sections. No direct instruction of students or direct supervision of teaching associates.


Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned.


Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.


Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials,supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.


* MS in Biology with concentration in Microbiology or related field
* Knowledge of media preparation, bacterial strain maintenance, and laboratory safety procedures
* Ability to work closely with faculty
