Reporting to the Associate Director for Residential Education, the Area Coordinator is a full-time, live-on professional position which provides leadership for and has administrative oversight of a designated residential community. The Area Coordinator serves as part of the Residential Education team, responsible for the education and daily management of 400-600 campus students, including oversight of two Hall Coordinators (elevated student leaders) and 11-15 Resident Assistants. The Area Coordinator plays a crucial role in the development and administration of: community initiatives; crisis management; student leadership, academic success; student mentorship; and staff development. The Area Coordinator also assists in planning, designing, and implementing department-wide initiatives and processes, such as student leadership selection and training, living learning communities, inclusion initiatives, and sustainability initiatives to positively impact student learning and retention.
The Area Coordinator collaborates with department and campus partners in order to create an environment that promotes a sense of community and belonging at CSUSB. The Area Coordinator provides support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students' out of classroom learning experiences, using knowledge of learning theories to support of the student experience and implement programs that enhance the overall academic success of students.
Provide guidance and direction to staff in regards to daily operations, training, programming, academic success, and community development.
Lead various administrative processes, such as, staff evaluations, student conduct, room changes, check-in/check-out processes, programming, etc.
Assist with regular review and revision of Residential Education initiatives.
Conduct weekly staff meetings and biweekly meetings with resident assistants.
Oversee budget for area (programming, student personnel, and supplies).
Establish office hours for availability to residents and staff.
Attend monthly departmental staff meetings.
Submit administrative reports and forms (i.e., incident reports, room change forms, end of the year reports, health and safety forms, etc.).
Supervise and lead hall opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of each quarter and during vacation periods and breaks.
Assist with room selection for new and returning students.
Maintain inventories of all residence hall equipment and furnishings.
Conduct weekly building walk-throughs.
Attend weekly one-on-one meetings with Associate Director of Residential Education.
Participate in professional staff selection process.
Collaborate with maintenance and custodial staff to respond to facilities concerns and/or emergencies.
Assist with departmental projects and initiatives as assigned by the Associate Director of Residential Education.
Serve on Department and University committees as assigned.
Advising and Student Success
Serve as primary advisor to Village Council.
Create and promote an environment that enhances a sense of belonging and commitment to the overall campus community.
Meet regularly with Village Council executive board members.
Attend RHA general assembly and executive board meetings as applicable.
Demonstrate support for the RHA and Village Council as a group by supporting and/or attending programs and events.
Work with students to successfully live with roommates within a residence hall or apartment community.
Provide information to help students access the necessary resources on and off campus.
Programming and Community Development
Conduct periodic review of programs to ensure high quality and adherence to the Housing and Residential Education mission, vision, and learning outcomes.
Promote educational, cultural, recreational, and social programs that meet the need of the CSUSB student population, including programs related to diversity/social justice, service learning, safety and security, and overall leadership development.
Assist in the development and recruitment of designated Living Learning communities.
Continuously assess residence hall student needs for additional programs and services
Develop relationships and rapport with residents.
Work on developing community initiatives that serve the individual halls and community.
Maintain visibility in the residence halls by attending evening programs, walk-throughs and regular contact with residents and staff.
Work closely with other Student Affairs departments and Academic Affairs.
Support and attend University events and programs.
Track hall programming efforts in programming database and master calendar.
Student Conduct and Crisis Management
Serve in professional on-call rotation. This position requires working variable hours, including late night and early morning hours as situations dictate, as well as when needed in an emergency response capacity. The Area Coordinator, in conjunction with other professional Residential Education staff members, alternate responsibility for on-call coverage.
Provide first line of professional assistance in meeting with residents regarding roommate(s), behavior, academics, and other concerns.
Resolve community related issues (roommate conflict, community respect, etc.) utilizing interpersonal, fact gathering, and analytical skills to determine severity of the situation and provide necessary steps and resources available to resolve the situation.
Adjudicate conduct violations within designated area and timeframe; implement and follow-through on disciplinary sanctions through an educational-based conduct process.
Counsel students, staff, and/or parents in crisis situations, psychological emergencies, and/or medical emergencies; while working appropriately with CAPS, Student Health Center, University Police, and other offices as necessary.
Communicate guidelines of conduct that protect the individual student's rights and define student responsibilities.
Advise and support Resident Assistants in matters of conduct.
Track incident reports and sanctions in a conduct database (Maxient).
Enforce University and DHRE policies.
Staff Leadership and Development
Supervise, lead, and direct a community staff of Hall Coordinators and Resident Assistants; provide functional leadership to Front Desk Assistants, Academic Mentors, and Program Coordinators
Participate in Resident Assistant recruitment and selection process.
Facilitate and participate in Resident Assistant training program, as well as on-going developmental training sessions.
Participate in on-going development with other Residential Education staff members.
Instruct a leadership-based Student Leader course.
Provide ongoing development for resident assistant staff.
Evaluate staff on a quarterly basis.
Assume responsibility for summer employee residence hall and/or summer camps and conferences, and a variety other Residence Education summer projects.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.
Minimum of two years of student services professional experience. Experience working for a housing/residence life department preferred.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
