Position Summary

Building Service Engineer - Under general supervision, incumbents operate, maintain, repair and inspect heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and water systems and equipment; test, adjust, and calibrate boiler and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and/or microprocessor control instruments; test and chemically treat boiler, condenser, and cooling tower water and water from other systems; maintain, inspect, diagnose and make emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, refrigerant, air and oil distribution systems; regularly use features of building automation systems to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in the HVAC systems while optimizing energy usage; monitor building automation systems data and adjust system accordingly; respond to service requests to adjust air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building areas or buildings; maintain swimming pools; maintain logs of maintenance and repairs using manual and computerized record-keeping systems; and may instruct and lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants. Incumbents also repair and replace bearings, shafts, seals, rings and electrical wiring and install central system parts, gauges, valves and pipes which requires the application of journey-level skills in one or more of the applicable trades.

Objective - Provide an "Industry Best Practice" preventive maintenance organization to the SDSU Community.

Expectations - Provide a thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Complete all routine work assignments and perform additional duties as assigned. Consistent meeting of university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. Follow-up on every project or task to insure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the FS Director. Maintains a responsible attendance record and consistently meets deadlines. Builds and maintains internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization. Seeks customer feedback, is responsive to customers and takes appropriate action for the situation.

Performs work in a manner that supports and facilitates the work of others in Facilities Services and the university community. Maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the department and campus community by practicing individual dignity, using tact and diplomacy, and always being respectful and civil. Uses respectful communication when dealing with people in all situations; demonstrating restraint, fairness and firmness. Works effectively to understand by carefully listening to understand prior to being understood.

Must be able to effectively communicate and successfully interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization. Must be able to perform strenuous physical work; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Ability to maintain confidentiality and work appropriately within the department hierarchy communicating effectively to resolve problems and proactively resolve conflicts or disagreements in the workplace, make suggestions and ask pertinent questions to facilitate effective communication. Ability to implement safety procedures, resolve problems and improve safety in the workplace. Works to instill in others the importance of workplace safety rules and regulations and takes appropriate actions.

Ability to conduct hazard assessments, and address those hazards accordingly, and applies Engineering controls as appropriate to address/mitigate hazards; promptly follows-up on health and safety risks, taking appropriate actions(s) and provides the necessary reports and documentation.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

Two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems or the equivalent combination of formal course work in mechanical technology and hands-on experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

-Prior experience, within three years, at a similar higher education environment, or a large multi-building facility environment.
-Completion of apprenticeship program and/or formal course work or certificate program in mechanical/electrical trade.
-APPA EFP Credential
-LEED Green Associate

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,020 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,742 - $7,414 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
