ABOUT THE POSITION
This position performs a variety of public works maintenance tasks; and operates light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment. Road Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level position and is expected to perform semi-skilled and skilled public works maintenance activities and to operate light and moderately heavy power-driven equipment on a continuous assignment. There is one position (40 hours/week) available in the Department of Public Works - Road Maintenance Division. This recruitment may be used to fill future Road Maintenance Worker II openings without reposting.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Construct and repair bridges, culverts and drain pipes; inspect bridges and culverts; form, pour and finish concrete; install guard rails.
Perform minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; change oil; grease and lubricate moving parts as required.
Prune trees and brush; operate boom truck, chipper machine and chain saws; clean and maintain roadside; clean ditches and culverts.
Prepare mix for patching roads, overlays and shoulders; spread asphalt and asphalt base in patching, repairing and reconstructing roads, overlays and shoulders.
Perform additional construction and maintenance tasks including concrete work; oil spreading; building fences; jack-hammering and a variety of repair activities.
Clean, maintain and operate power tools, welder and other tools.
Install temporary construction signs; direct and control traffic around work sites.
Operate heavy power-driven equipment on a relief training basis.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Possession of a valid California Class A Commercial Driver License; Combination of Vehicles, Double/Triple Trailers and Tank endorsements required. A current California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) 10-year printout (H-6) will be required from the successful applicants upon receiving a job offer.
- One year of increasingly responsible experience performing road maintenance work involving the operation of construction equipment.
- Operation of power equipment, including trucks and related equipment, tools, methods, and materials used in road and bridge construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Must meet the requirements for Department of Transportation (DOT) Safety Sensitive positions, including drug and alcohol testing.
