BACKGROUND
Sierra College is seeking equity-minded applicants for its Equity Educator Intern Program. Sierra College is a Community College located near Sacramento, California where a heavy emphasis is placed on academic excellence and student success. Since its founding in 1936, Sierra College has focused on quality instruction and meeting the evolving needs of the students and communities that it serves. The Sierra Community College District covers more than 3,200 square miles and serves the Northern California foothill counties of Placer and Nevada, as well as parts of El Dorado and Sacramento. We serve over 18,000 students throughout the region in both on-ground and online courses, including students at our main Rocklin Campus as well as at three centers located in Grass Valley, Tahoe/Truckee, and Roseville. Our District prides itself on academic excellence, having been named an Aspen Prize for College Excellence eligible institution for 2019.
As an institution, Sierra College is committed to eliminating the equity gap in all student populations with dynamic, learner-centered practices and policies that fully engage the college community. Currently, Sierra College enrolls 18,300 students per term, where approximately: 27% of Sierra College's students are Latino/a/x, 3% are African-American, 2% are Filipino, 5% are Asian-American, 1% are Native American, 1% are Pacific Islander, 6% are multiracial and 52% are White. The Sierra College Equity Educator Intern Program is instrumental in developing a talented and dynamic pool of community college instructors who can intentionally contribute towards the aforementioned goals.
Sierra College is seeking an Equity Educator (intern) that will share Sierra College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse students. Equity Educators will intern with a Faculty Ambassador (mentor) dedicated to the use of curriculum that is culturally-responsive to the students it serves. The internship program is committed to providing opportunities to Equity Educators to learn and practice learning strategies appropriate for diverse community college students as a means of recruiting qualified faculty with an equity mindset.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Equity Educator Intern Program is designed to provide hands-on experience in an educational setting with a Faculty Ambassador for one semester. To enhance the Equity Educator's introduction to the field of instruction, the program has the following two components: 1) approximately 16 hours of equity and student-centered training (at no cost to the Equity Educator) and 2) approximately 64 hours of classroom observation/program requirements, which includes no more than 6 hours of direct instruction.

    • Briefly describe your career goals and interest in teaching at a community college, as well as why you want to be a part of this program.
    • How is equity and higher education related to one another? As an Equity Educator, how would you create a classroom culture that intentionally supports the success of students from different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds?
    • Provide specific examples that reflect your demonstrated experience understanding the needs of historically underrepresented populations.
    • Your anticipated class and/or work schedule for the Spring 2021 term.

Salary & Benefit Information:

The Equity Educator shall receive a stipend of $500 upon conclusion of the program and meeting all expectations outlined above.

Duties:

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS/OPPORTUNITIES
  1. Expectations for this position include:
  2. Attend the equity and student-centered training.
  3. Attend every class meeting led by assigned Faculty Ambassador (for one course) in the Spring 2021 semester.
  4. Meet with assigned Faculty Ambassador for a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes per week to discuss any questions, concerns, ideas, lesson plans, etc.
  5. Teach a minimum of three (3), not to exceed four (4), class sessions.
  6. Meet with the assigned Faculty Ambassador for a minimum of thirty (30) minutes subsequent to each class session taught to exchange feedback.
  7. Observe at least one other unassigned Faculty Ambassador's class.
  8. Participate in a mid-semester facilitated discussion with Equity Educator cohort.
  9. Attend an end of semester debrief and celebration.
  10. Obtain guidance regarding the part-time faculty application and interview process. This could include interviewing for a part-time teaching position.
  11. The Faculty Ambassador is the instructor of record; respect their experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
The Equity Educator program obligation is approximately eighty (80) hours.

Qualifications:

ELIGIBILITY
  1. Graduate students within one (1) year of completion of a Master's degree or Doctorate degree OR meet the minimum qualifications of a subject-matter discipline AND
  2. No prior paid higher education teaching experience AND
  3. Demonstrate the ability to utilize an equity mindset framework in the classroom.
