Job Description

General Purpose

Performs a variety of technical work in the development, maintenance, and support of GIS infrastructures.

Supervision Received and Exercised

This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with a 40 hour work-week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:
  • Creates and maintains spatial data for a wide scope of projects.
  • Completes infield data collection.
  • Manages operation of GIS equipment such as Trimbles.
  • Creates geoprocessing tool to automate different tasks.
  • Assists in the design, development and creation of databases, maps and other related projects.
  • Supports developing of map applications to facilitate the production of geographic reports.
  • Educates new GIS users of other Departments.
  • Updates online interactive maps on the City's website.
  • Performs zoning inspections and spatial analysis.
  • Investigates, evaluates, and recommends, pilot programs and implements evolving technologies and techniques associated with the development and support of GIS systems.
  • Specifies display standards for GIS files and based documents and ensures that submitted documents are in compliance with established standards; converts documents to meet standards.
  • Advises management of internet technologies and trends; recommends strategies for agency GIS departmental planning.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, Natural Resources, Computer Science, Planning, Environment Science or a related field.
  • Two (2) years experience using ArcGIS 9 or 10. Knowledge in ArcDesktop, Spatial Analyst, Geodatabases.
  • ESRI Technical Certification is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to use GIS systems.
  • Familiarity with GIS applications in planning, public policy or related intergovernmental process is desired.
  • Fundamental knowledge and skill in the operation of GIS. Equipment, including computer hardware, plotter/printer setup, GPS.
  • Knowledge of RDBMS including development skills. MSSQL is desired.
  • Good analytical / problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to complete short-term projects with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry.
  • Ability to use computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
  • Desire to learn new skills related to GIS development including computer hardware, software, extensions.
  • Ability to get along with others and work effectively and courteously with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Must be a non - smoker.
  • The minimum requirements may be waived by the City Manager.
Physical Requirements :
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
