Under the general direction of the Director of Communications and Marketing, the News and Information manager is responsible for leading efforts to advance the good reputation of the University through effective use of executive communications and proactive media relations. The News and Information manager serves as the primary contact for University and external personnel for presidential and leadership communications on all University-related matters to the campus and greater communities as the university's public information officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following :

  1. Prepares or reviews written materials for senior leadership for all manner of public communications and any other communications at the discretion of the Director of Communications and Marketing.
  2. Performs research necessary to produce and review appropriate University-wide communications.
  3. Reviews for approval or drafts all statements provided to news media on behalf of the President and senior leadership.
  4. Oversees and participates in the development and implementation of news stories for print, web and social media. Writes and promotes media stories to broadcast, print and new media representatives. Writes press releases and media advisories. Prepares pitches for national, regional, and student media.
  5. Responds to media calls and inquiries on a wide range of topics relating to CSUMB. Acts as the university spokesperson on media relations matters. Articulates CSUMB issues, priorities and programs. Develops relationships with media reporters and editors. Develops relationships with CSUMB administrators, faculty and staff to gain the knowledge necessary to respond to media calls and state the CSUMB's position correctly.
  6. Assists in the development and execution of external and internal communication plans, strategies and tactics, including developing and implementing crisis communications plans.
  7. Leads the development and distribution of media relations tools (e.g. Daily Clips, Speakers Bureau). Provides oversight for media content creation. May be responsible for taking photographs, script writing, and other related duties.
  8. Serves as the Executive Editor for University news publications, supervises Public Affairs and Communication specialist.
  9. Maintains content for new sections of the website using web content management system.
  10. Serves on University Emergency operations team for public relations, writing and content editing prior to distribution.

Other Functions :

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Position may be on call for emergency operations, occasionally requiring night or weekend work.


Thorough knowledge and experience in effective speech writing for organizational leaders; managing projects in a complex organization; making effective decisions with sound analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus; strategically supporting growth and/or change.

Advanced knowledge of and a broad understanding of the public affairs discipline including reputation management, crisis communications planning and response, traditional media, new media, advocacy and strategic communications. Understanding and sensitivity to the unique academic mission of CSUMB.

Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills. Supervisory skills, and advanced writing skills including strategic public relations (PR) writing that carries the CSUMB's targeted messaging. Must have excellent judgment and an understanding about sensitive/breaking news and the ability to respond appropriately. Excellent skills in project management and as a spokesperson. Critical thinking skills to properly use all appropriate PR channels. Excellent organizational and planning skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor. Commitment to the highest ethical standards.

Ability to work with and advise a broad cross-section of administrators, staff and faculty. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with limited supervision under tight deadlines. Ability to manage crises. Ability to work in a collegial manner with other professionals.


Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, English or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience. At least three (3) years of public relations, communications or PR agency experience. Previous supervisory experience.


Master's degree in a related field, and APR (Accredited Public Relations) certification. Highly desirable : Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.


Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.


Anticipated hiring salary is in the low $7,000's/month.
