TheDepartment of Public Health (DPH)is recruiting forPublic Health Nurses I (PHN I)who provideassessments of individuals, families and communities.Duties include intensive case management, coordinating and assisting with access to care; developingtreatment plans; providingconsultation on medical, dental and behavioral health assessments; acting as a nurse liaison with public and private agencies, providing assessments and referrals for school district students; and conducting disease control measures. There are vacancies in Family Health Services (FHS) and California Children's Services (CCS) sections in DPH.

The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies within DPH as they occur.

Family Health Services
Family Health Services (FHS) section of DPH specializes in many dynamic public health nursing programs and includes Health Care Program for Children in Foster Care, Rx 4 Kids, Children Screening, Assessment, Referral and Treatment, Black Infant Health, and Maternal Child and Adolescent Health. FHSworks in partnership with public and private agencies to provide nursing case management, care coordination and consultation.

California Children's Services
The California Children's Services (CCS) section of DPH is a statewide program that arranges, directs, and pays for medical care, equipment, and rehabilitation, when these services are authorized for children and young adults under 21 years of age, who have CCS-eligible medical conditions and whose families are unable to pay for all or part of their care. CCS defines eligibility and selects the most qualified professionals to treat the child's CCS eligible condition.

Travel/Driver License:Travel throughout the County is required.Employees will be required to make provision for transportation.At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.
Background Investigation:Applicants selected for these positions must pass a background investigation and verification of employment history and education.
Continued Education:Additional training/coursework may berequired.
Trainee: Public Health Nurse Imustbe promoted to Public Health Nurse II ($6,045.87 - $8.916.27 monthly) upon meeting the minimum requirements with a satisfactory work progress report. Incumbents must qualify for promotion after completion of appropriatepreceptorshipprogram or be terminated.
Out-of-State Registered Nurses: PublicHealth Nurse I incumbents who possess a Registered Nurse license issued by a state other than California must obtain and maintain the required CA Registered Nurse license -and- the required Public Health Nurse certificate issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) prior to hire/employment start date. Contingent job offers may be made to applicants who have provided verification that they have applied for their CA Registered Nurselicense -and- Public Health Nurse certificate with the CA BRN.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following licensure and certification requirements:

Licensure: Must possess and maintain a valid Registered Nurse license** issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN).


Certification: Must possess and maintain both of the following items:
  • A valid California Public Health Nurse certification** issued by the CA BRN, -and-
  • A Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.

**Out-of-State Licensed Registered Nurses: Applications will be accepted from Registered Nurses licensed in other states; see Conditions of Employment.

Desired Qualifications

CCS Section: Experience working with pediatric populations (e.g., Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), which includes inpatient/outpatient intensive care management.

Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and/or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation is associated with positions requiring the use of bilingual skills. Testing of bilingual skills may be required to receive additional compensation.
Candidates possessing computer skillsin Microsoft applicationsare preferred.
