DEPARTMENT STATEMENT:

Student Health and Counseling Services provides basic,augmented and preventive health care to CSUEB students. These services support the clinic's mission to have students achieve and maintain an optimal state of health so they may attain their academic and career goals.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Clinical Assistant (CA) is a patient caregiver who under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and the medical supervision of Student Health and Counseling (SHCS) Medical Director and other CSUEB Physicians, is responsible for direct and indirect patient care activities. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory testing will be performed after competency obtained and validated. The CA also helps maintain efficient and effective workflow to ensure high quality health care.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a 10/12 pay plan position. The incumbent will work 10 months out of the year with the salary spread over 12 months.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform clinical medical office assistance

A. Patient intake and preparation
* Verify identity of patients and confirm that self check-in is completed appropriately
* Provide initial contact with patients, elicit the chief compliant, perform the appropriate vital signs and other exams relevant to the chief compliant (e.g. Peak flows, pulse oximetry, vision exams, glucometer, fingersticks, audioscope, etc.)
* Room and prepare patients for examination by the physician including setting up equipment and supplies (example: pelvic exam supplies, suture removal kit, etc.). When necessary, order and send patients to collect urine samples for lab testing
* Clean and prepare rooms for the next patient
* Enter nursing and intake notes into EHR: update allergies, LMP, chief compliant, vital signs, and other nursing exams as above
* Perform chaperone duties when necessary
* Perform opening and closing down procedures for the exam rooms
* Under limited circumstances, may schedule patients for follow-up, move patients in the schedule or change length of appointment time with licensed provider consultation when necessary

B. Nursing clinic
* Perform EKG's
* Administer nebulizer treatments with pre- and post peak flows, pulse oximetry, if needed
* Irrigate cerumen from ears
* Apply fitted supports and splints to patients when ordered by an MD/NP and may assist the MD in splinting and casting.
* Dispense crutches, fit and teach patients in use
* Use glucometer to check finger stick glucoside
* Set up and assist with procedures such as but not limited to incision, drainage, suturing, toenail removal and minor skin surgery
* May perform CLIA waived laboratory testing once trained and authorized by the appropriate Administrator

C. Assist Nurses and Physicians/Nurse Practitioners with the examination and treatment of patients. Components of this function include, but not limited to:
* Clean, stock and maintain medical equipment
* Clean medical environment

D. Perform cleaning, maintenance, and inventory of medical supplies and equipment
* Perform centralized stock room duties including stocking, reorganizing and maintaining stock supplies
* Responsible for cleaning and reorganizing
* Ensure daily stocking of exam rooms
* Cleaning of exam rooms as needed and after each patient and at the end of the day, per infection control policy and procedure
* Cleaning during semester breaks in all areas of clinic
* May perform laundry duties for clinic needs
* Sterilize equipment using chemical treatments and autoclave

Perform other duties as assigned. This could include participation on various committees and outreach activities. May perform front office duties on occasion such as working at the front desk to handle calls and make appointments. May also be asked to perform Family Pact billing with the appropriate training.

E. Related Functions
* Manage emergency and crisis situations appropriately, as they arise.
* Provide lead work direction to student assistants and conduct orientation/cross-training for staff as needed.
* Participate in and support Student Health and Counseling Services committees, as assigned.
* Duties and responsibilities may change as the job necessities and within the scope of clinical assistant job duties.
* Understand, support and comply with the mission, policies and procedures of the Student Health and Counseling Services.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Nurse and/or the appropriate Administrator.

REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to understand and comply with the legal aspects of medical care (including HIPPA, FERPA and related California law) and to protect confidentiality of personal health information
* Use of computer software systems including electronic medical records
* Ability to lift up to 10 pounds
* Ability to walk down long hallways, sit occasionally, stand in one place and holding still when needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:
General Knowledge of daily clinic operations and organization ranging from patient scheduling and reception to delivery of health care services and processing mof paperwork, aseptic techniques and requirements: and the uses, application, and proper operation of various medical supplies and equipment used in performing the duties described above, such as in preparing examining rooms, obtaining patient data, and assisting practitioners.

Abilities:
Ability to learn clinical assistance methods and techniques: Understand and use basic medical terminology to accurately and efficiently support practitioners and follow their instructions: perform clinical assistance activities accurately and timely: Handle instruments and equipment properly: read and write English at a level appropriate to the position to support maintaining accurate records and reading medical terminology: use health center automated systems to enter and maintain data and prepare simple reports: maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center report staff: and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent and familiarity with a health care setting or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

* BLS certified.
* 6 months of experience in an Ambulatory/Primary care setting as well as performing front and back office duties.
* Familiarity with SHCS policies and procedures, manuals, nursing protocols, infection control and emergency disaster manuals.
