DEFINITION:
Directs a large staff providing physical therapy services to patients with any physical or mental disease or injury; and training affiliate students in a large acute multi-hospital complex.
Essential Job Functions
Evaluates and justifies budgetary needs for personnel, facilities and equipment for the physical therapy department and Rehabilitation Services and supervises preparation of the budget.

Analyzes and evaluates the quality of physical therapy programs to assess their effectiveness.

Evaluates needs and services and sets goals, objectives and standards of physical therapy services; formulates programs and directs their implementation by establishing policies and practices and coordinating physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and audiology with other health services.

Directs the administrative, educational and supervisory staff in the development and implementation of new physical therapy programs and revision of existing programs.

Directs the maintenance of records and preparation of reports as required by law.

Develops and maintains liaison with the medical, nursing and physical therapy staff, allied health disciplines and outside governmental or community agencies to promote cooperation and obtain assistance in evaluating, identifying, modifying, and improving physical therapy and audiology services.

Write, reviews and revises departmental policies and procedures.

Supervises and advises subordinate supervisors on problems such as hiring, promotions, employee grievances and discipline. Makes final decisions in resolving problems of employee utilization, grievances and disciplinary actions.

Delegates assignments to key personnel to develop specific therapy programs for each area of physical therapy and reviews progress in achieving goals.

Interviews and selects key supervisory personnel and evaluates their performance. Approves selection of all physical therapy and Rehabilitation Services personnel and reviews their performance evaluations.

Directs and delegates the implementation of training programs for physicians, nursing staff, affiliate and graduate students, allied health personnel, and the physical therapy staff.

Directs research applicable to the development and improvement of therapy services.

Develops and directs educational programs for the USC School of Medicine Continuing Education Division.
Requirements
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy acceptable to the Commission on Accreditation on Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California* -AND- Three (3) years of physical therapy experience at the level of Physical Therapy Supervisor II** or higher.

**Experience at the level of a Physical Therapy Supervisor II in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Manages physical therapy services in several treatment units or programs in an acute, rehabilitation, or psychiatric hospital or clinic; manages multiple aspects of the physical therapy program in an acute, rehabilitation, or psychiatric hospital or clinic; or manages physical and occupational therapy services in several therapy units within California Children's Services.

LICENSE:
A license to practice as a Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California.*

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

  • A Master's degree* or higher from an accredited college or university in Physical Therapy, Public Health, Public Administration, Special Education, Health Services Administration, or a closely related field.
  • American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties Certificate.*

*In order to receive credit for any college course work, or any type of college degree, such as a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, completion of a certificate program, certificate or license, you MUST include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization; or official license or certificates with your application within 15 calendar days of filing. EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications, weighted at 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be added onto the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
