San Mateo County Health is seeking an experienced, Spanish-speakingMedical Office Specialistfor the Integrated Behavioral Health services at San Mateo Medical Centertoprovide difficult, technical, complex or specialized office support on a part-time basis.

Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) provides an integrative approach to psychology, psychiatry, and behavioral medicine for outpatient primary care and medical specialty clinics at San Mateo Medical Center. Our services span specialty categories of health psychology, behavioral medicine, and community mental health, and we are privileged to work with individuals who represent diversity in race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic background, disability status, sexual orientation, and clinical severity.

The IBH clinic is a busy setting with several providers offering clinical services, therapists collaborating and consulting amongst themselves and with outside agencies, frequent phone calls, and lots of patient support materials being produced. Medical Office Specialists play an important role in the clinic by working closely with therapists to provide administrative support and coordination in a variety of areas.

ThisMedical Office Specialistperforms a variety of specialized administrative duties including providing customer service to patients in a busy clinical setting; providing translation and interpretationfor Spanish speaking clients; collaborating with other professionals in a team setting; assisting in the development and implementation of patient support materials; and coordinating office administrative activities. The successful hire will be able to perform detailed support work accurately; prioritize work and coordinate several activities; compose routine correspondence from brief instructions; use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; operate standard office equipment, including copier and computer terminal; organize and maintain accurate patient and general files and records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; and understand and carry out oral and written directions. They will also operate electronic medical records such as eCW and Avatar and use Microsoft Office Suite to perform work duties.

Theideal candidatefor the position has the ability to work independently with minimal supervision using initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; proven technical skills mastering use of a variety of computer programs; embraces change; read, interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures; maintain accurate records and files; organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines; communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Additionally, the ideal candidate is also detail-oriented, has the ability to multi-task, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, is a team player and experienced working with small multidisciplinary teams, is able to establish boundaries, and has good decision-making skills. Experience in customer-facing functions, ideally in a healthcare setting is desirable. Desire to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged adults with health concerns is strongly preferred.

This position requires being onsite a minimum of four days for week. Specific hours are flexible depending on applicant's availability.
Qualifications
Language Requirement:
The ability to speak, read, and write fluently in both English and Spanish required.

Education and Experience :
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of journey-level office support experience in a medical office setting OR two years of general clerical or office assistant experience.

Knowledge of :
Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; basic business data processing principles and the use of word processing or personal computing equipment; medical terminology as related to office support work; policies and procedures related to the medical treatment or screening area to which assigned; proper form for typed materials; business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; and record keeping principles and procedures.

Skill/Ability to :
Perform technical, specialized, complex or difficult medical office support work; organize, prioritize and coordinate work activities; read, interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures; organize, research and maintain patient and general office files; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; compose routine correspondence from brief instructions; make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy; use initiative and sound independent judgment within established guidelines; and operate standard office equipment, including a word processor, personal or on-line computer, and centralized telephone equipment.

Note: Specific positions may require the ability to type at a rate of 40 net words per minute from printed copy.
