Duties and Responsibilities
Performs structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical inspections of residential, commercial and industrial construction to ensure compliance with City, county and state Building Codes and regulations; reviews and approves plans and specifications, soils reports and grade reports prior to issuance of permits; may check plans to ensure compliance with Codes; issues correction notices and stop orders for improper construction and/or Code violations; follows up to ensure corrections are made; coordinate and oversee activities of any special/deputy inspectors as needed; prepares reports and recommends improvement; responds to inquiries and complaints; investigates violations of building Codes and ordinances; may make mobile home installation, public works construction or business license inspections; coordinates with Fire Authority and City Divisions.
Materials, equipment and techniques of building and construction; general provisions of the Uniform Codes; State, county and City building codes and regulations.
Read plans and specifications; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish good working relationships with the public, other City departments and developers; enforce Code requirements and detect deviations from approved plans and specifications.
Education equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by college training in architecture or civil engineering.
Four years responsible experience as a contractor, inspector or journeyman in building trades or with a county or municipal government.
Education or training that can be related to the knowledge and ability requirement may be substituted for up to two years on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher in good standing, by date of appointment. ICC (International Code Council) certification in Building Inspector or Planning Examiner is desirable.
