Under general direction, theSystems Librarian I/IIwill have:
  • Professional knowledge and technical background with Millennium/Sierra, including the ability to generate reports, create scripts, etc.
  • Professional understanding and knowledge of cataloging procedures and principles including but not limited to:AACR2, RDA,LCRI,LCPS, LC classification,LCSH, MARC bibliographic and authority formats.
  • Leadership and continuing implementation of San Mateo County Libraries' word-based classification system,Findit!
  • Maintaining an awareness of developments in general cataloging issues and standards, metadata standards, and librarianship in working with print, serials, digital, e-materials and evolving formats.
  • Work in a public services capacity as needed.


Theideal candidatewill also have the ability to:
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons of any age.
  • Select, evaluate, and weed library materials of all formats systemwide.
  • Visualize, plan, and deliver non-traditional and innovative library services that benefit the needs of the community, both inside and outside of our buildings.
  • Take responsibility for a specific program area either working out of a library or administration offices, while maintaining the flexibility to work in a variety of different capacities depending on evolving community needs
  • Bring an innovative, creative approach to library programs and services, helping San Mateo County Libraries provide surprising and delightful experiences to our communities
  • Plan, develop, and implement trainings for coworkers based on library priorities
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and contribute to systemwide projects, task forces, and committees
  • Establish cooperative working relationships with community members, various community services providers, and library staff
  • Use technology as a tool, staying on top of new technology trends
  • Take initiative, working independently and with others
  • Exhibit leadership skills, and work in a collaborative, fun environment
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers
  • Assist patrons with circulation activities
  • Provide operational support in resolving patron complaints and in troubleshooting technology
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Because of the diversity of the communities we serve,bilingual language skills are preferred(but not required) for this position. Specifically, we seek applicants with the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English and another language. Fluency in Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish is preferred.

NOTE:This is a limited term, at-will position.Limited Term Employees are assigned to assignments not to exceed three years. They receive medical and dental benefits, similar to regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan.
Qualifications
Education: Master of Library Science or recognized equivalent degree, from an American Library Association accredited college or university is required.

Knowledge of:
  • Library purposes, organization, techniques, and procedures.
  • Principles of library materials selection.
  • In-depth reference and bibliographic resources.
  • Library classification, cataloging, and filing systems.
  • Current general and/or children's literature.
  • A specialized program area.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.
  • Composition of the community and its needs.
  • General practices and uses of computers and computer information systems.
  • Automated library functions.
  • Peninsula Library System and related policies and procedures.

Skill/Ability to:
  • Plan and supervise the work of staff.
  • Train staff in specialized areas.
  • Develop library programs/projects.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with staff, the public, and community groups.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  • Instruct others in the use of library materials.
  • Conduct individual user needs assessments.
Language Skills: Bilingual language skills, specifically English/Spanish and/or English/Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin) are preferred but not required.
