SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:
Due to the Manpower Shortage Recruitment, new appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step5 of the applicable salary range. This is in effect until June 30, 2019 or until it is determined that a shortage no longer exists, whichever is sooner.


DEFINITION:Performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, or immunohematology) or across specialty lines using manual or automated methodology, under the supervision of a physician or a Supervising Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a general or a specialized medical laboratory on any shift

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs specific tests on specimens such as whole blood, plasma, serum, urine and other body fluids to determine the presence and quantity of metabolic substances or to identify the presence and amount of toxic substances.
  • Draws and/or types and cross-matches donor or recipient blood; performs serological tests to identify the presence and measures the quantities of antibodies associated with medical conditions.
  • Cultures, isolates and identifies microorganisms, performs microscopic examinations of blood or body fluid samples.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, calibrations and troubleshoots instrument malfunctions.
  • Performs and evaluates quality control, accounts for the validity of test results and institutes corrective actions.
  • And trains lab assistants, licensed trainees, new laboratory scientists and medical personnel in training.
  • And oversees the work of Laboratory Assistants assigned to assist with testing.

Requirements

Selection Requirements
Valid and Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist's license, issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.

Physical Class II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

License:Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.

Special Requirement Information:
Applicants must attach a valid legible photocopy of their license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at the time of filing. Applicants who currently practice and/or reside in another state, must have a valid and unrestricted license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must have a license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.

The required license must be current and unrestricted ; a provisional, probationary or restricted license will not be accepted.

Withhold Information:
Applicants who do not possess a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California Department of Health Services at the time of filing, may compete in this examination; however, the names of such candidates will be withheld from the certification for employment until the required license is presented. Applicants must attach a legible photocopy of their Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the state in which they currently practice and/or reside to the application at the time of filing.

Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Examination Content:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of your training and experience based upon application information weighted at 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be added to the Eligible Register.

Vacancy Information:
The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

Eligibility Information:
Applications will be processed on an"as-received"basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of eligibility.

No person may compete for this examination more than once every six (6) months.
