The City of Chesapeake was formed in 1963 through the consolidation of the City of South Norfolk and Norfolk County. Located in the southeastern quadrant of the state, Chesapeake is comprised of 353 square miles -- the second largest city in land area in Virginia. Chesapeake is the home of the historic Dismal Swamp Canal, first envisioned by George Washington in 1763. The Dismal Swamp Canal is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is a part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

Chesapeake is centrally located in the Hampton Roads region and is well linked to other Hampton Roads cities and towns through an extensive interstate and state highway system.
