Major/Essential Functions • Reports Data, Identifies and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/outcomes. • Prepares and operates necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments and procedures. • Administer or assist with the administration and documentation of medications. • Assists with and performs focal assessments and procedures documenting the assessments and interventions in the EMR. • Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities. • Maintains working knowledge regarding the storage, usage, safety and administration of medication via Direct Observation Therapy (DOT) and Pill Window. • Triage SCR by ensuring compliance with ATC and P&P. • Completes and documents on incoming chain reviews. • Makes daily restrictive housing and medium custody rounds. • Sharps (working and bulk) are maintained and counted per policy. Required Qualifications License/Certification: Current Vocational Nurse License in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Position Description Provides advanced professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients. Coordinates the delivery of clinical health care within a TDCJ Correctional institution, insuring that the appropriate health care is accessible and provided to the inmate population in a timely fashion regardless of segregation status. Renders medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit according to TTUHSC Correctional Health Services Policies and Procedures, TDCJ Policies and Procedures, and National Commission on Correctional Health Care Standards. Works under the general direction of the Regional Medical Director with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Receives general supervision from the Regional Medical Director. Supervises physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Work is performed in a correctional institution with contact with inmates. Deadlines, interruptions, meetings, and travel necessary. Additionally, work requires collaboration with the faculty and staff at TTUHSC. Major/Essential Functions • Adheres to institutional and departmental safety policies and procedures. • Interacts with prison administrative officials in formulating unit policy. • Provides immediate care for medical emergencies of offenders, employees and on-site visitors. • Refers patients to medical specialists when appropriate and necessary, and coordinates medical care with said specialists. • May perform minor surgical and orthopedic procedures commensurate with medical competency. • Utilizes the appropriate leadership skills in delegating and directing nursing staff. • Provides an environment conducive to safety and security for patients, visitors, and employees. Assesses the risk to the patient and employee safely and implements appropriate precautions. Complies with approved and appropriate standards of patient care as well as the policies of TTUHSC and TDCJ-ID. • Is responsible for providing primary ambulatory medical care to the offenders of TDCJ. This includes taking an appropriate patient history, examination of patients, ordering lab or x-ray as clinically indicated, and planning and execution of treatment. • Ability to work under pressure and to maintain patience and self-control under these conditions. • Requires special knowledge and skills in general medicine, orthopedics, and emergency medicine. • Participate in rotation with other providers after hours and on weekends, and holidays to provide patient care. • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. • Provides necessary leadership for unit staff (i.e. interviewing, training, contracting) when appropriate. • Acts as Unit Health Authority for the Unit. • Communicates with Regional Medical Director Regarding all medically related issues or problems in a prompt manner. • Inspects, completes, and analyzes records. Assigns, reviews and updates classification, completes admission notes, progress notes and discharge/death summaries, and makes rounds on patients. • Provides supervision and delegation of prescriptive authority, reviews charts and monitors care provided by physician extenders on site and at outlying units as assigned. • Supervises a clinical pharmacist according to Drug Therapy Management laws and policies. • Serves in rotation with other providers after-hours and on weekend and holidays to provide patient care. • Adheres to policies and procedures required by local, state and federal agencies. • Supports and promotes the values-based cultures of TTUHSC.
