    Description:

    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

    The Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) Senior is responsible for protecting the public health and environment on behalf of the Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH). The ideal candidate will be an innovative and organized professional who coordinates and performs inspections and investigations in one or more environmental health programs ensuring the adherence to environmental health laws and regulations . The EHS Senior will lead activities of at least one program area. They will manage the assigned program(s) and activities; including auditing, tracking time, expenses, and revenue for the program(s) in order to promote continual improvement, assure quality of work completed and adherence to program contracts and agreements. Professionals in this position prepare reports of inspection findings and recommendations, and initiate enforcement actions as necessary. The candidate will educate, respond to, and answer inquiries about environmental health issues from the general public . They will assist and advise interdepartmentally and amongst team and community members . The candidate will serve as a member of committees and panels and will engage in public speaking . They will also provide support in the public health response to environmental health emergencies.

    SCHEDULE:

    This is a hybrid position with the expectation of primarily working in the field, while office-related tasks can be completed from home. The schedule is Monday through Thursday, working four 10-hour shifts.

    Personal Choice Work Model: After six months of employment, all employees can work with their supervisor to develop a personal choice work model and schedule that works best for them and ensures all role expectations are met . This means an employee may choose to work from the office more or from home more, with some general expectations such as in-person tasks required by role.

    COMPENSATION:

    Hiring Range: $36.44-$3 9 USD Hourly

    Compensation will be determined based on education, up to 10 years' experience and relevant certifications.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    • Regulate environmental health conditions by inspecting a variety of facilities .


    • Lead program areas, advise team members, assure quality of work and verify adherence with all requirements. Determine facilities compliance and initiate enforcement actions as necessary.


    • Coordinate investigations with local and state officials .


    • Prepare educational materials on health issues.


    • Respond to and investigate public concerns and health emergencies. Determine proper response activities. Assist facilities in obtaining compliance.


    • Act as liaison to other interest groups and departments. Serve on committees and panels. Attend conferences, seminars and workshops in order to maintain and improve environmental health program knowledge.


    • Prepare grants for program funding.


    • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Experience: Three years related work experience

    Education: Bachelor's degree

    License/Certifications:

    • National Environmental Health Association’s (NEHA)


    • Registered Environmental Health Specialist ( R E HS )


    • or equivalent strongly desired .


    *Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

    Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities :

    Industry-specific Knowledge:

    • Ability and proven experience with onsite wastewater treatment systems.


    • Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian Credential from the National Environmental Health Association.


    • Master’s degree in Environmental Health or Public Health


    • Work experience in regulatory inspections, or other similar work experience.


    • Strong knowledge of basic operations, services, and activities of an environmental safety and health awareness program.


    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations as they pertain to environmental health or ability to learn quickly.


    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Jefferson County Public Health employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.


    • Ability to act as an official representative of JCPH in a professional manner with local and national agencies and organizations.



    Technical Skillset:

    • Program/project planning, development and management skills.


    • Strong knowledgeof modern office procedures and equipment, including Office 365.


    • Bilingual skills.


    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to all education levels


    Soft Skillset:

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.


    • Strong leadership qualities.


    • Passionate about agency's mission and vision.
