JOB POSTING LOS ANGELES COUNTYSANITATION DISTRICTS invites applications for the position of: COMPOST FACILITIES MAINTENANCE MECHANIC Tulare Lake Compost The Sanitation Districts are a non-civil services public agency with over 1,700 employees. Tulare Lake Compost (TLC) is a state-of-the-art, 175-acre facility located near Kettleman City in Kings County, California. At the facility, an eco-friendly process is used to combine agricultural green wastes from the Central Valley withbiosolidsfrom Los Angeles County to create an optimal mixture for composting. The facility currently has the capacity to transform up to 100,000wet tons per year (wtpy) of anaerobically digested anddewateredbiosolidsinto valuable, nutrient rich, Class A Exceptional Quality compost. TLC is owned and operated by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts as part of their diversifiedbiosolidsmanagement program. LOCATION: TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, REUSE & COMPLIANCE SECTION, TULARE LAKE COMPOST, KETTLEMAN CITY, CA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To operate equipment in support of the daily operations and maintenance of a composting facility. JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, incumbents will perform varied tasks such as operating utility equipment and using hand tools to perform composting activities, custodial and other processing duties; load and distribute biosolids, bulking agents, feedstocks, compost, amendments and other related materials; use equipment to push, lift, pile, convey, place, mix, grind, screen and spread composting materials as well as finished compost; assist with building heaps in various phases; operate a mobile winder to cover and uncover compost at various stages of the process; assist in manually anchoring and sealing the compost cover system; inspect equipment prior to use and reporting any repair or maintenance needs; fuel vehicles and equipment; assist with the maintenance of equipment and site facilities; keep basic records of tasks performed using computerized and manual recordkeeping systems; and perform related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS For BOTH CLASSES : A valid California Class C driver license for positions performing on-the-job-driving. A valid California Class B driver license may be required for positions operating a small motor sweeper if driven on public roads and streets; -AND- at the Compost Utility Equipment Operator I level: One year of progressively responsible experience operating a variety of utility equipment -AND- at the Compost Utility Equipment Operator II level: One year as a Compost Utility Equipment Operator I for the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County or equivalent. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Prior experience operating loaders, skid-steers, dump trucks, or similar utility equipment is highly desirable. EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA For BOTH CLASSES: Knowledge of : Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a composting facility; hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to : Perform the more difficult and complex tasks of the crew; use various hand tools; safely operate a variety of utility equipment; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; understand verbal and written instructions; understand applicable safety rules and procedures.
