Job SummaryThe purpose of this position is to perform a variety of manual labor tasks and other functions as assigned. Under direct supervision, operates a variety of automotive and light maintenance and construction equipment; performs numerous maintenance and construction tasks.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Examples of Duties
- Operate a variety of light duty trucks, lawn tractors, tractor mowers, push and zero turn mowers, weed eaters, bed edgers, backpack blowers and chainsaws, and other equipment;
- Operate other light duty motorized equipment as assigned;
- Transport work crews, equipment, materials, and supplies to and from work sites;
- Serve as a member of litter patrol crew;
- Assist in loading and unloading equipment and supplies;
- Wash, grease, service, and make minor adjustments to equipment;
- Perform a variety of manual labor tasks; and
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
• Ability to read and write sufficiently to complete required tasks (high school diploma or GED preferred); and
• One year experience operating equipment;
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and of the precautions needed to avoid accidents.
- The occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of automotive and motorized equipment.
- The methods and materials used in servicing and operation of light duty vehicles and motorized equipment machines.
- Tools, including their design, use, repair and maintenance.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used in grounds maintenance work.
- The operation of light duty vehicles and motorized equipment.
- Using logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions to problems.
- Controlling operations of equipment.
- Making minor repairs and maintaining equipment.
- Recognize and report abnormal operating functions of equipment.
- Perform strenuous work.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements including storm response.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Prepare basic records.
- Work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Meet mental and physical demands of the job.
- Various light duty vehicles and light landscaping maintenance equipment, and other assigned tools and equipment.
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
