The purpose of this position is to properly operate a variety of light to medium-duty construction equipment and to perform routine and emergency repairs to equipment and vehicles in the Street Division. This position operates necessary construction or maintenance equipment on-site, relocates necessary material to and from the site, and occasionally oversees the work crew.
This is a continuous recruitment and open until filled.

Examples of Duties
- Operates light to medium construction or maintenance equipment such as, but not limited to: asphalt rollers, tractors, backhoes, skid steer loaders, pothole patcher, crack sealer, cement mixers, dump trucks, salt spreaders, and brine sprayers;
- Assists crew with manual labor efforts of raking and shoveling asphalt, rolling asphalt, pouring concrete, and mixing cement;
- Provides aid to other crews in the execution of various assigned tasks;
- Completes routine maintenance, pre-trip inspections, reports equipment failures, and repairs or replaces worn or damaged parts;
- Occasionally supervises work crew;
- Provides barriers and visual notifications in order to maintain worksite safety;
- Prepares daily worksheets and reports all incidents or accidents immediately to a supervisor;
- Supports other departments with special events, inclement weather prevention, and post-storm cleanup; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED; and
- One year experience operating various light to medium-duty construction equipment.
- Six months supervisory or crew leader experience (preferred).
Knowledge of:
- the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of construction equipment and related attachments;
- occupational hazards and proper safety precautions needed to prevent and avoid accidents/injuries;
- state and local laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to and involved in operating equipment.
- using and operating the assigned equipment or systems;
- performing repairs and maintenance of assigned equipment;
- using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems;
- ensuring a machine is working properly;
- communicating with others to convey information effectively.
- read and interpret surveyor's reports, grade stakes, and other materials in order to complete the job to specifications;
- judge terrain, determine the amount of cut and fill required, and correctly alter earth to desired construction design;
- listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences;
- direct the work of assigned crew members;
- work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public;
- work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others;
- meet mental and physical demands of the job.
Special Requirements
- Valid N.C. Driver's License and an acceptable driving record.
- Valid N.C. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required within six months of hire and an acceptable driving record.
