DescriptionPosition Overview
Located at the Hall of Justice in Redwood City and branch facilities throughout San Mateo County, the Superior Court of California is seeking a dynamic, solutions-driven Courts Senior Information Technology Technician. This is a Tier-2/Tier-3 hands-on technical role bridging advanced endpoint engineering, enterprise systems administration, and white-glove customer support for judicial officers, courtroom staff, and court administration.
The ideal candidate operates like a modern systems administrator on the ground: highly proficient in Microsoft 365 administration, Windows enterprise deployment, active directory/identity management, and cloud collaboration, paired with an innate ownership mindset and exceptional customer service acumen under pressure.
Examples Of Duties
1. Microsoft 365, Identity & Systems Administration
- Perform administration across Microsoft 365 tenant services, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and Intune/Entra ID (Azure AD).
- Manage hybrid Active Directory objects, group policies (GPOs), RBAC user permissions, distribution lists, shared mailboxes, and multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Deploy and maintain endpoint configurations using modern imaging and management solutions (Autopilot, Intune, MDM/RMM platforms, PowerShell automation).
- Monitor endpoint security posture, verify antivirus/EDR agent health, ensure Windows monthly patch compliance, and remediate local security vulnerabilities.
2. Tier-2/3 Endpoint Engineering, Courtroom AV & Network Diagnostics
- Serve as escalation authority for complex desktop, laptop, and peripheral issues across physical and virtual Windows 11/10 environments.
- Configure, troubleshoot, and support courtroom audiovisual (AV), digital court recording (ECR), video arraignment, and hybrid remote hearing platforms.
- Diagnose network-edge connectivity anomalies, including Ethernet port patching, 802.1X authentication, DHCP/DNS reservations, and local switchport VLAN validation.
- Author and maintain runbooks, standard operating procedures, and asset documentation in the IT service management (ITSM) and knowledge base systems.
3. High-Touch Customer Service & Technical Leadership
- Deliver calm, professional, white-glove technical support to judges, courtroom clerks, executive management, and operational divisions during time-sensitive court proceedings.
- Take end-to-end ownership of service tickets from initial triage through resolution, providing transparent communication and root-cause follow-through.
- Mentor, guide, and cross-train junior IT technicians on troubleshooting methodology, ticketing discipline, and standard operating procedures.
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
Experience: To be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will have at least, three (3) years of progressive, hands-on experience in IT technical support, desktop engineering, or systems administration. Experience must demonstrate direct administration of Microsoft 365, Active Directory, enterprise endpoint management, and high-touch customer support. (An Associate or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field may substitute for up to one year of experience).
Desirable Certifications: Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator / Endpoint Administrator (MD-102), Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals (MS-900), CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, or equivalent vendor credentials are strongly preferred.
Application/Examination
This recruitment is Open & Promotional. County of San Mateo and Superior Court employees with at least six months of continuous service receive five (5) promotional preference points upon passing.
- Application Screening: Pass/Fail evaluation based strictly on qualifications and technical screening responses in the Supplemental Questionnaire.
- Panel Examination: Weighted 100%. Oral panel interview including practical troubleshooting scenarios evaluating diagnostic rigor, M365 competency, and customer de-escalation skills.
Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in County of San Mateo, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
