To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Cultural Resources Program Director, the Cultural Resource Coordinator (CRC) performs (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work and is responsible for coordinating cultural resources management activities within the region. This position is responsible for ensuring agency compliance with state and federal antiquities laws, including the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) Code, the Antiquities Code of Texas, and the National Historic Preservation Act. Reviews projects with ground-disturbing activities on properties owned or managed by TPWD. Responsible for developing scopes of work and management and oversight of contracted work; develops cultural resources management plans for individual state parks. Manages project budgets. Provides technical assistance and staff support to operations and site superintendents. Functions as a member of project teams and performs archeological field work. Coordinates archeological efforts with preservation services, curatorial services, interpretive services, and the natural resources programs. This position has stop-work authority over all regional activities that may affect cultural resources' integrity. All regional activities not otherwise exempt from review and which involve ground disturbance, vegetation clearing- except hand clearing, and any construction disturbing the ground are reviewed and assessed by the Resource Coordinator. Position provides assistance to the Cultural Resources Program Director. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Archeologist II & III

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Applied History, Historic Preservation, or related field.

Experience:

Archeologist II

Three years progressively responsible archeological experience to include: (1) archeological fieldwork, and (2) writing professional reports on archeological research or cultural resources

issues and (3) project management, and (4) cultural resources management and (5) supervisory experience.

Archeologist III

Five years of progressively responsible archeological experience to include; (1) archeological fieldwork, and (2) writing professional reports on archeological research or cultural resources

issues and (3) project management, and (4) cultural resources management and (5) supervisory experience.

Licensure:

Applicant must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid state driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining a state driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Applied History, Historic Preservation, or related field with formal course work in archeological field techniques.

Experience:

Archeologist III:

Five years progressively responsible experience conducting archeological fieldwork to include some staff supervision, writing professional reports, ensuring compliance with state and federal antiquities laws.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Archeologist II

Knowledge of prehistoric and historic archeology, gained through academic training and job experience;

Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture;

Knowledge of artifact identification and analysis techniques;

Archeologist III: Knowledge of Archeologist II; PLUS:

Knowledge of environmental assessments and impacts statements related to archeology;

Knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing guidelines, and policies related to the protection of archeological resources.

Archeologist II

Skill in archeological survey, site identification and/or testing, and archeological field recording;

Skill in assisting archeological/technical report writing;

Skill in GIS mapping of archeological sites;

Skill in using computer databases and word processing programs;

Archeologist III: Skills of Archeologist II; PLUS:

Skill in all phases of archeological survey and testing and report writing;

Skill in managing multiple projects, short deadlines, and conflicting priorities;

Skill in preparing scopes of work and budgets for all phases of archeological investigations;

Skill in managing contracted archeological projects;

Archeologist II

Ability to apply research techniques and methodologies to archeology;

Ability to utilize GIS/GPS for field recording and database compilation;

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and using technical writing skills;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;

Ability to work with individuals with different types of training and experience to create solutions and bring projects to completion;

Ability to review construction designs that require archeological protection;

Ability to obtain a Texas Antiquities Permit from the Texas Historical Commission.

Archeologist III: Ability of Archeologist II; PLUS:

Ability to manage and coordinate program activities and accomplish program goals using independent judgment and initiative;

Ability to administer contracts;

Ability to work under minimal supervision, exercise initiative, and accomplish several tasks simultaneously;

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to work on holidays, weekends, and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as necessary;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to travel 25% with possible overnight stays;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
