20-25 HOURS/WEEK
Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
THE POSITION
The City of Sunnyvale Department of Library and Recreation Services is seeking two Project Assistants within the Sports, Aquatics and Facilities unit for the implementation, coordination and oversight of the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League. Candidates may be assigned evening and/or weekend shifts within this position.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Project Assistant 1 position may exercise skills and experience in a particular area of recreation programming. The primary assignment for this position is for the seasonal Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League (SYBL).
This position will be mainly based in the Recreation Building on the Community Center Campus, in the Recreation Services Division of the Department of Library and Recreation Services or Columbia Middle School Gym and Multi-Purpose Room. Travel to other locations within Sunnyvale will be required.
Essential Job Functions
(May include, but are not limited to, the following):
- Assist in the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating of a community service and/or recreation program.
- Interact with participants, parents, and community members and provide excellent customer service.
- Oversee and schedule the use of facilities, ensuring participants follow established policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare reports, maintain files and records related to the program.
- Operate a computer using word processing and business software and other office equipment.
- Determine and implement the appropriate course of action in emergencies and/or stressful situations.
- Creatively solve problems; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Establish, maintain, and promote positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
- Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties.
- Learn the operation, policy and procedures of the Library and Recreation Services Department.
- Work independently and as a team member; recognize and set priorities and meet deadlines.
- Respond to requests for information and program complaints.
- Assist in the training, supervision and evaluation of assigned contract or casual staff.
- Assists with the recruitment and scheduling of casual staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books and documents weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some duties require incumbents to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:
- Minimum age is 18 years old
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- One year of experience working with some type of organized sports programs/leagues or aquatics services.
- At least six months of some lead or supervisory experience in recreation programs or other community-based service.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Recreation, sports programs/leagues, aquatics, arts and community services standards, practices and resources.
- Common recreational and social needs of various populations and age groups.
- Principles and practices of program, service and/or facility operations, including the methods and techniques of evaluation and budgeting.
- Basic mathematics.
- Office methods, procedures, software, and equipment.
- Principles of customer service
ABILITY TO:
- Assist in the development and implementation of recreation, aquatics, arts and community services programs, services, and facilities.
- Assist in recruiting, training, and coordinating the work of casual part-time and volunteer staff and program participants.
- Learn policies and regulations related to assigned program area.
WILLINGNESS TO:
Work irregular hours or shifts, and on nights, weekends, or holidays when needed.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in one or more of the following specialty areas: Arts, Customer and Business Services, Special Populations, Seniors and Therapeutics, Sports and Aquatics, and/or Youth and Teen Services.
- Some college units in recreation, gerontology, education, social work, etc.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C CA driver's license and a safe driving record OR the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
