Position will end on or before September 30, 2027. Permanent status cannot be earned in this grant funded position. This Temporary appointment can be concluded prior to the stated temporary appointment end date, normally with a two-week notice period. Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$5,044.00 - $5248.00 per month ($60,528.00 - $62,976.00 annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Lab Technician will be responsible for but not limited to all aspects of the research projects. The incumbent duties and responsibilities contain working knowledge of basic cell and molecular biology techniques, including making solutions, subcloning, plasmid preparation, PCR, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescent confocal microscopy. The technician will maintain lab equipment and provide technical assistance and training to students in the lab.

Position Information

Examination of cellular organization and function. Duties include collection of imaging data and quantitative analysis during embryonic development.

Conduct Research Experiment

• Conduct cell and molecular biology experiments investigating cell-cycle organization, organelle dynamics during mitosis, cytoplasmic partitioning, and the inheritance of organelles and other cellular components by daughter cells; collect, compile, and analyze experimental data.

Research Lab Management

• Maintain laboratory stocks and prepare biological specimens, reagents, solutions, media, and laboratory materials; perform microscopy, imaging, molecular assays, and other experimental procedures relevant to ongoing research projects.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, research supplies, biological materials, and inventories; assist with equipment troubleshooting, ordering, and compliance with institutional biosafety, chemical safety, and research protocols.

Research Data Analysis and Reporting

• Process, quantify, and interpret microscopy and experimental data; maintain accurate laboratory records and prepare results in graphic, pictorial, tabular, or written form for laboratory meetings, presentations, reports, and publications.
• Contribute to the preparation of research reports, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, standard operating procedures, and other technical or scholarly materials related to organelle inheritance and the generation of cellular diversity.

Student Training

• Train and provide day-to-day guidance to undergraduate and graduate student researchers in laboratory procedures, data collection, equipment use, research documentation, and laboratory safety practices.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledges and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, determining variables, developing bibliographical and other sources of data, and preparation of research reports; general knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of collecting statistical data, simple correlation methods, time series analyses, analysis of frequency series, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers; general knowledge of sources of information on social, economic, and population trends in California.
• Ability to prepare questionnaires and other survey instruments; ability to gather, compile, and analyze research data, and to present data in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form, ability to prepare and work clear and comprehensive reports; capacity for independent and creative thinking and writing on research and statistical problems; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a small team.

Experience:

• Two years of progressively responsible experience in technical research or statistical work in the collection. compilation, and analysis of data.
• Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Education:

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities delineated above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

A master’s or PhD in the area of cell and molecular biology, experience in the use of the model organism Drosophila melanogaster or another cell biology model system, working knowledge in the area of embryology/developmental biology, and some office/booking keeping skills would be helpful.
