DescriptionThe City of Tustin’s Finance Department is currently seeking a motivated, and detail-oriented individual for the position of Finance Intern. This part-time opportunity is ideal for someone interested in gaining valuable, hands-on experience in municipal government while supporting the day-to-day operations of a professional Finance team.
The Finance Intern will have the opportunity to assist with a variety of administrative and finance-related functions while developing practical skills and gaining exposure to the operations of a local government agency.
THE POSITION AND OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The selected candidate will provide administrative support to the Finance Department. This position is ideal for a student who enjoys administrative work, is organized and dependable, and takes pride in completing routine tasks accurately and efficiently. Responsibilities will primarily include scanning and filing documents, performing data entry, organizing and maintaining records, assisting with document management, and providing general clerical support to help with the day-to-day operations of the department.
The ideal candidate will also be a positive and reliable team member who is eager to learn and willing to assist wherever needed. This opportunity is especially well suited for a current student pursuing a degree in finance, accounting, public administration, and/or business administration who is interested in gaining practical, on-the-job training and experience within a municipal Finance Department.
This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position, with total hours limited to fewer than 1,000 per fiscal year. Hours may vary from week to week. The anticipated work schedule will include Mondays, with additional hours generally scheduled on Wednesdays and alternating Fridays. Specific hours may vary based on departmental needs .

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
Application materials will be carefully reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Candidates who are determined by subject matter experts to be the best qualified for the vacancies will be invited to a structured panel interview.
All candidates who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which is valid for one (1) year and may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification
Examples of Duties
As a part-time Finance Intern, incumbents will perform a wide variety of duties. Examples of these duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Reviews invoices and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy and identifies discrepancies or missing documentation
• Follows up with other departments to obtain missing receipts, invoices, and other required documentation.
• Maintains and organizes departmental files, records, and databases, including scanning and digitizing documents
• Reviews documents, records, and files for completeness and conformance with established regulations and procedures
• Assists with various Excel spreadsheets, including data entry, compilation, organization, and review of financial information.
• Gathers and compiles financial data and assists with reconciliations and other accounting-related activities
• Provide administrative support to assist with digitizing documents and organizing files across various finance divisions
• Assists with other administrative duties and assigned tasks
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in pursuit of an associate or bachelor’s degree with a major course of study in finance, accounting, public and/or business administration.
Special Requirements:
Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening.

Employment for this group is at-will and based on continued programmatic needs. No guarantees are made related to hours or longevity. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.
Employees do not receive health, retirement, or any other benefits unless otherwise required by law .
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
In lieu of Social Security, e mployees are required to contribute 5.5% of salary on a pre-tax basis every pay period to an OBRA 457 deferred compensation plan. The City contributes an additional 2%, for a total combined contribution of 7.5%.
