Essential Job Functions

Countywide Youth Bridges Program (CYBP)
The Countywide Youth Bridges Program (CYBP) provides at-risk and disconnected youth with career exposure opportunities within the County of Los Angeles, and provides them with resources such as supportive services and personal enrichment training that will help prepare them for future success. More importantly, the CYBP will ultimately introduce youth to various career pathways within the public sector.

CYBP provides meaningful career exposure within the County by offering a three-step program.
  • Step 1 - Internship: 120-hour Work Experience
  • Step 2 - Youth Worker: 12-Month County Job
  • Step 3 - Brighter Futures: Permanent Employment

AVAILABLE CAREER PATHWAYS AND TYPICAL DUTIES:

1. General (8252):
Receive on-the-job training, and under direct supervision participate in entry level work in one of a variety of job assignments in the following functional areas:

Clerical Assignments :
Function as a receptionist in a variety of settings.
Assist the public by providing directions, instructions and responding to routine inquiries in person or by telephone.

Assist in operating a small telephone switchboard or system.

Type from plain or corrected copy, drafts or verbal instructions, such materials as reports, letters, vouchers, receipts, lists, schedules, etc.

Paramedical, Paratechnical and Specialized Assignments :
Assist in performing simple routine duties, under direct supervision, in a patient care unit or laboratory, radiology unit, or for graphic arts, photography services, recreation therapy services, social and children services, the museum, library, beaches, parks, etc.

Physical Class 2 - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

2. Facilities Support (8253): Receive on-the-job training, and under direct supervision participates in entry level work in one of a variety of job assignments:

Craft assignments:
Assist a more experienced worker by furnishing and using basic hand tools, materials and supplies, cleaning the work area and machinery, operating simple machines and equipment, preparing basic reports or keeping maintenance records, and performing other non-complex duties.

Institutional Support Assignments :
Assist a more experienced worker in maintaining the physical premises and/or grounds of County facilities.

Assist in transporting of patients, supplies, laboratory specimens, exhibit materials, or records; or transporting and serving meals, etc.

Issue supplies, check property and keep order in the locker or dressing rooms at a County public swimming pool; perform basic pool maintenance and ensure that first aid equipment is ready for use; monitor assigned pool area for signs of swimmers in trouble and for violations of pool and safety regulations.

General Maintenance Assignments:
Assist journey-level trade positions in performing installation work or repairs, such as replacing windows, doors and partitions, performing minor sheet metal work, making minor roof repairs, or maintaining parking lots.

Food Service Assignments:
Assist a higher-level food service worker or supervisor in performing routine kitchen duties in the preparation of food in a County facility, including a custody facility in the Sheriff's Department.

Physical Class 3 - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

3. General Labor (8254):
Receive on-the-job training, and under direct supervision participate in entry level work in one of a variety of job assignments.

Perform manual work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets or bicycle trails in flood access roads as needed.

Assist in the maintenance of drains, catch basins, curbs, gutters, head walls, and driveway aprons by tamping underlayment, mixing concrete, wheel barrowing concrete to the work site, lifting and carrying concrete blocks, and providing tools to more experienced workers.

Assist in sewer maintenance work, such as cleaning sewer lines with the use of specialized hand or power operated tools and equipment, including sewer cleaning machines, pumps, air compressors, blowers, gas detection devices, closed circuit television equipment, etc.
Physical Class 4 - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of 120 hours of career exposure with the County of Los Angeles Department of Human Resources' Countywide Youth Bridges Program; must be between 16 and 24 years of age at the time of appointment.

Applicants who have previously served as a Youth Worker for a cumulative period exceeding 10 months are not eligible to apply. Eligible applicants may receive only one subsequent Youth Worker appointment.

You will need to receive a score of 70% or higher to proceed with being placed on the list. Since this opportunity is a noncompetitive, pursuant to CSR 8.02, those who achieve a passing score will be placed on the list without indication of relative standing. Candidates entitled to veteran’s credit will be placed ahead of candidates who are not. For information on veteran’s credit, please review the Employment Information section of this job posting. This list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur.
EXAM REVIEW:
MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
