The Inventory Control Technician supports the Utilities Department by managing essential inventory and warehouse functions that ensure the availability, accuracy, and readiness of materials and assets. Through effective coordination of purchasing, receiving, storage, distribution, and inventory control, the role strengthens operational reliability across utility services. By maintaining well-organized systems and ensuring timely resource availability, this position directly contributes to efficient department performance and seamless service delivery to the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
  • Performs and supports daily warehouse and storeroom operations by overseeing purchasing, receiving, storage, distribution, inventory control, maintenance activities, and asset management for uniforms, parts, tools, materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintains accurate and organized inventory records, ensures timely completion of cycle counts and physical inventories, and reconciles discrepancies to support reliable inventory accountability.
  • Prepares and maintains administrative and financial documentation, including budgets, invoices, purchase orders, procurement card statements, material disbursements, and related reports in coordination with Finance and Legal as needed.
  • Coordinates with vendors to obtain pricing, acquire specialized materials, monitor contract compliance, expedite orders, and resolve delivery or billing issues.
  • Supports inventory planning by forecasting needs, identifying trends, determining reorder points, rotating stock, organizing storage areas, and ensuring appropriate inventory levels for departmental operations.
  • Ensures storerooms and warehouse areas remain clean, orderly, safe, and secure while maintaining compliance with city and state guidelines related to acquisition, storage, distribution, maintenance, and disposal of inventory and associated records.
  • Determines and manages disposition of expired, damaged, spoiled, or obsolete items in alignment with established policies and safety requirements.
  • Participates in training as assigned and responds to emergency or storm-related events as required on a 24-hour call basis.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations and organizational needs.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Three (3) years of inventory control, materials management, or record keeping experience are required.
  • Forklift Certification may be required within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Automotive and Heavy equipment parts procurement and terminology.


COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of basic accounting, purchasing, and inventory recordkeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of effective communication principles needed to maintain positive working relationships with city staff, vendors, suppliers, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting, and processing inventory, purchasing, and accounting documents with accuracy.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication to relay information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work effectively under general supervision, manage daily responsibilities, and collaborate with multiple departments and stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain professional and cooperative working relationships in a variety of interactions.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical requirements include lifting up to 100 pounds rarely. Subject to vision constantly; sitting, handling, fine dexterity, balancing, hearing and talking frequently; standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing and foot controls occasionally; kneeling, crouching and crawling rarely.

ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions involves exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, heavy equipment, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.

This is a safety sensitive position.
