Hiring Range:
Child Support Specialist I: $3,784 - $4,920/month (DOE)
Child Support Specialist II: $4,181 - $5,436/month (DOE)
Ideal Candidate:
- Manages a diverse child support caseload with accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
- Reviews case files and payment records to ensure compliance and takes appropriate enforcement actions when needed.
- Conducts interviews with custodial and non-custodial parents and other parties to gather, verify, and evaluate case information.
- Assesses financial circumstances to establish child support obligations and determine ability to pay.
- Resolves payment issues through effective problem-solving, negotiation, and application of child support laws and regulations.
- Coordinates and secures voluntary child support payment arrangements whenever possible.
- Prepares thorough, accurate case documentation and court-ready materials for legal proceedings.
- Researches, locates, and communicates effectively with individuals while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
- Interprets and applies child support policies, laws, and procedures with sound judgment and consistency.
- Builds productive working relationships with clients, courts, and partner agencies to support successful case outcomes.
- Prioritizes a high-volume workload, meets deadlines, and adapts to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrates initiative, accountability, and readiness to perform at an advanced Child Support Specialist level.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
The minimum and preferred requirements are listed below. Education and Experience:
Child Support Specialist I:
MINIMUM: Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of progressively responsible office support experience which has involved extensive public contact, interviewing customers to obtain financial and personal information OR one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in a public agency or legal agency equivalent to the County’s classes of Office Assistant or Accounting Assistant.
PREFERRED: 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college with major coursework in administration of justice, business administration, behavioral or social sciences, or related field and at least one (1) year of responsible experience in a child support agency or social service agency which has involved preparing legal documents and/or performing collection duties.
Child Support Specialist II:
MINIMUM: Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of progressively responsible office support experience which has involved extensive public contact, interviewing customers to obtain financial and personal information with at least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the County's class of Child Support Specialist I.
PREFERRED: Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in administration of justice, business administration, behavioral or social sciences or related field and two (2) years of experience equivalent to the County' s class of Child Support Specialist I.
Licenses and Certification:
- The ability to obtain a valid California Class C driver's license within ten (10) days of employment; may be required to maintain throughout employment.
- Typing Certificate: Min: Net 35 wpm. Typing Certificate must indicate result from a five (5) minute test of at least the minimum net wpm required.
Special Requirements:
- May be required to work a flexible shift to include evening and weekend hours.
- Must successfully complete an extensive and thorough background investigation which includes Live Scan fingerprinting prior to hire.
- Pursuant to Internal Revenue Service regulations, those having access to federal tax information must undergo a background check including a criminal history screening and citizenship residency validation every five (5) years.
- Will be required to perform disaster service activities pursuant to Government Code 3100-3109.
