The Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technician supports the City’s essential water distribution and wastewater collection systems by operating, inspecting, and maintaining infrastructure and related equipment to ensure reliable service and regulatory compliance. It is accountable for diagnosing and resolving system issues, contributing to facility improvements, and maintaining accurate operational records. Through proactive maintenance and problem-solving, this position helps safeguard public health and optimize system performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of the City’s sewer collection lift stations and well water systems by overseeing maintenance, repair, and upgrades of mechanical, electrical, and SCADA equipment.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct inspections to identify and resolve issues, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and operational standards.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports to support accountability and regulatory compliance.
  • Respond to SCADA alarms, operational emergencies, and disaster situations to minimize service disruptions and protect public health.
  • Assist with construction, improvement, and modernization of water and wastewater facilities as needed.
  • Perform other related duties to sustain reliable infrastructure and essential public services.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Level II Wastewater Collections, Class C Ground Water Treatment, or Class C Surface Water Treatment certifications are required within three (3) years of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of experience operating and maintaining water/wastewater systems

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of maintenance documentation, work orders, and manufacturer manuals, with the ability to interpret technical information accurately.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication, fostering positive working relationships with internal departments, contractors, vendors, and community partners.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing operational needs.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally. Subject to vision hearing and talking constantly; standing, sitting, walking, handling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing and foot controls frequently; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling reaching, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching and crawling occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions involve occasional exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, machinery with moving parts, electrical currents, confined spaces, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases. Utilizes body harnesses, confined space breathing equipment, and/or other personal protective equipment as required.
