Detention Officer

The City of Forney is seeking qualified and motivated individuals to join our team as Detention Officers. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the safety, security, and daily operations of the jail.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate professionalism, sound judgement, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Examples Of Duties

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Monitors activities to ensure the jail is secure and that inmates are not able to escape; corrects inmate behaviors as needed; processes booking of inmates and ensures adequate care of inmates.
  • Supervises inmate actions to ensure compliance with policies and procedures and prevent physical harm to inmates and staff; writes reports detailing daily activities and any incidents that occur.
  • Performs inspections and shakedowns of jail facilities.
  • Responds and diffuses emergency and dangerous situations to include fights, suicide attempts, and assaults; applies force as needed to prevent inmates from harming themselves, other inmates, or staff members; maintains custody of inmates while in hospital.
  • Maintains cleanliness and operational capacity of jail.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision exercised: No direct supervision exercised; may exercise occasional administrative and functional supervision for specified activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of experience in law enforcement, jail operations or equivalent is preferred.
