Crossing Guard
Under the direction of the School Resource Officer, the primary job of a crossing guard is to provide for the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing public roadways and intersections by observing gaps in traffic and leading the children across the roadway or intersection. Crossing guards are not to engage in traffic direction or control.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
- Assists children to and from school in safely crossing roadways and intersections.
- Watches for gaps in traffic and walks children across the roadway or intersection while holding a "stop" sign in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
- Erects temporary pedestrian crossing signs in cross walk.
- Works approximately one hour a day, Monday through Friday, during the public school year (August through May). Specific hours to be worked will be set by the Chief of Police and may vary according to demand and workload.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen and be 21 years or older
- Valid driver license with good driving record
- Able to work when school is in session
- Ability to react quickly and effectively in stressful situations
- Good verbal and written communication skills, clear and concise speech
- Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
- Ability to perform essential functions of this position
Supplemental Information
- Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
- Shall be able to pass a background screening including no convictions of any family violence offense or any violation that prohibits contact with children.
Physical Requirements: Shall be in physical condition that will permit job performance with the ability to lift, carry and transport the temporary pedestrian crossing signs.
