Essential Job Functions

  • Leads a crew of workersby providing direction to crew members, monitoring and coordinating the crew members’ work, and tracking crew and equipment hours in order to ensure they efficiently and effectively clear properties of grass, weeds, brush, rubbish, and other combustible materials.
  • Provides on-the-job training to work crew membersby identifying where training is needed, developing a plan to meet the training need, monitoring the progress of the trainee, and providing feedback on training performance in order to ensure all work crew members are competent to perform the work safely and effectively.
  • Coordinates clearing operations of weeds, undergrowth, and debris performed by vendors. Monitors their work activities and evaluates performance through completed work and photographs. This ensures the work meets the County of Los Angeles contract standards and requirements.
  • Promotes established safety practices and proceduresby setting a personal example and communicating departmental rules and procedures and other safety regulations (e.g., Cal-OSHA) to crew members in order to ensure a safe work environment and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Inspects properties by walking the site and gathering information about the site from maps and other resources, and identifying hazards in order to determine the extent of the work to be done, to prevent damage and injuries, the resources needed to perform the work, and to ensure the accuracy of cost estimates.
  • Estimates costs associated with clearing weeds, brush, and rubbish from propertiesby identifying the type of work to be performed, determining size of the area to be cleared, and determining the materials and other resources required in order to ensure adequate funding for the work to be performed.
  • Transports tools, materials, and work crew members to work sites using a County vehicle (truck or van up to 10,000 lbs.) by locating the site on a map, driving to the site while obeying all traffic laws, and parking the County vehicle in an authorized and safe location in order to ensure all required tools, materials, and personnel are available at the site to perform the work required.
  • Performs and has the responsibility of the maintenance of hand and power tools and heavy and specialty equipment (e.g., compactors, chippers) used in weed, brush, and combustible materials abatementby cleaning, lubricating, sharpening, conducting minor repair work, etc. in order to ensure the effective and safe operation of tools and materials.
  • Performs weed, brush, and combustible materials abatement tasksby using hand and power toolsin order to clear properties and demonstrate proper weed, brush, and combustible materials abatement methods to subordinate work crew members.
  • Communicates orally with supervisors, work crews, property owners, vendors, and other agencies. Uses two-way radios, telephones, or in-person talks to clarify work requirements. Discusses logistics and issues related to the work. Exchanges information about problems encountered during work.
  • Prepares written reports, such as daily diaries, weekly and monthly reports, by hand, computer, iPad, camera, or word processing software. These reports detail all work performed, required photographs, hours worked by self and crew members, and costs involved in completing the work.

Requirements

OPTION I: One year of full-time outdoor work experience* in the eradication and control of weeds, brush, or other vegetation.

OPTION II: One year of full-time outdoor work experience* in a lead capacity** over manual laborers performing eradication and control of weeds, brush, or other vegetation.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver's License*** is required to perform job-related essential job functions .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Part-time experience will be considered based on proration. Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, such as 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience.

** "Lead capacity" is defined as positions that act as a team or group leader to at least two (2) or more journey or lower-level employees with responsibilities for assigning, coordinating, and reviewing the work, ensuring proper work methods are followed, and providing technical assistance and training. Positions spend no more than 50 percent of the time performing similar duties as the positions that they lead.

*** Driver License Information: Applicants for roles that require driving must acquire and present a copy of their driver's license and driving record from the California State Department of Motor and Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted or revoked.

PHYSICAL CLASS IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an Evaluation of Experience based on the application information weighted 100%.

Candidates must meet the Requirements and receive a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination to be placed on the eligible Register.

WITHHOLDS OR OUT-OF-CLASS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE MUST BE FULLY MET AT THE TIME OF FILING AND CLEARLY INDICATED ON THE APPLICATION.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Applications will be processed as they are received, and candidates will be added to the list accordingly. Individuals who successfully pass the assessment(s) are placed on a list based on their score group for a duration of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur. NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

VACANCY INFORMATION: The list of successful candidates created from this examination will be used to fill TEMPORARY and PERMANENT vacancies throughout the County of Los Angeles in the Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures as they occur.

AVAILABLE SHIFT: Appointees are expected to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
