JOB SUMMARY

The City of Manhattan Beach is now accepting applications for the position of Police Services Officer. The Police Department is busy and looking for an individual who likes to work in a fast-paced setting and has a vast knowledge and experience in public safety to join our team.

Under general direction, the incumbent performs duties in the jail facility of the police department, which include processing the admission and release of persons in custody, including preparing booking reports and release forms, fingerprinting, photographing and safeguarding property entrusted to their care, along with administrative and clerical duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Performs various duties associated with the maintenance and operation of the jail facility.
  • Receives, searches, fingerprints, processes, supervises, transports and releases detainees; testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Tracks inventory and orders supplies for the jail facility.
  • Keeps records and takes reports of a minor nature not requiring or warranting the presence of a sworn officer
  • Transports detainees to other facilities; utilizes communications equipment and two-way radio during transport.
  • Removes and stores personal property of detainees; returns personal property stored in jail facility at release.
  • Documents incidents and works with sworn personnel to provide details and information pertaining to incident investigations.Assumes responsibility for the welfare and safety of all detainees within the City jail facility.
  • Performs security, safety, and health checks of persons and facilities; calls for medical assistance of detainees in the event of an adverse health event or emergency.
  • Oversees maintenance and cleanliness of jail.
  • Completes all booking paperwork.
  • Administers first aid, as needed, including administering CPR/AED.
  • May be required to work shifts, holidays, and/or weekends.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Education/Training/ Experience:
  • A High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent AND one (1) year of experience involving customer service is required.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:
  • A valid CA driver’s license is required.
  • Successful completion of the Adult Corrections Core Course Academy within one (1) year of employment is required.
  • Candidates must successfully complete a polygraph test, psychological and medical examinations, and an extensive background investigation process prior to appointment.
  • In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Manhattan Beach employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.

Knowledge of:

Title 15 of California Code of Regulations; police department policies, practices and procedures; safety rules and procedures; self-defense methods and physical restraint techniques; knowledge of general office procedures and equipment operations.

Ability to:
Write clearly and concisely in English; understand departmental policies and procedures; follow written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

The selection process may be changed as deemed necessary by the Human Resources Department.

The selection process will consist of the following components and weights: Written Examination (Pass/Fail- Qualifying) and Interview Examination (100%)
  • Written Examination is tentatively scheduled for July 30, 2026
  • Interview Examination is tentatively scheduled for August 26, 2026
*Final appointment in the Police Department is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of an extensive background investigation and a polygraph examination.

Part-time employees are enrolled in PARS (Public Alternate Retirement System). All part-time and seasonal employees contribute 7.5% each pay period on a pre-tax basis. If an employee reaches 1,000 hours within a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) or is already a CalPERS member, then they are enrolled in CalPERS (Public Employees Retirement System).

The City complies with California Labor Code 245-249 by providing paid sick leave for part-time hourly employees accordingly.

The City of Manhattan Beach does not provide medical/dental/vision benefits to part-time employees. Eligible employees enrolled in CalPERS may opt into a CalPERS medical plan.
