Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional II)

Position Summary

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at San Diego State University is seeking an Academic Advisor to serve its undergraduate students. The Academic Advisor will support a caseload of students by providing academic advising, student support, and programming that enhances student achievement and timely graduation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Academic Advising: Advise current, prospective, and former students on course planning, degree progress, and university policies.
• Support At-Risk Students: Counsel students experiencing academic difficulty and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
• Student Engagement: Facilitate group advising sessions, orientation programs, and student success workshops.
• Cross-Collaboration: Collaborate with SDSU’s Residential Education Office and Division of Student Affairs to create and facilitate academic programming in student residence halls.
• Event Support: Assist with key events such as New Student and Parent Orientations and Explore SDSU informational sessions.

Position Information

• This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
• This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
• The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) faculty, through advising, teaching, and supervising, offers students a balanced education of academic study, field placement, clinical experiences, and research opportunities. CHHS consists of the following schools: the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, the School of Physical Therapy, and the School of Public Health.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Key Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of experience as an academic advisor in higher education.
• Experience providing outreach services to students, specifically first-generation college students.
• Demonstrated experience analyzing data to determine trends related to retention and graduation rates.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department’s budget and equity guidelines.

• CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $5,083/month .
