    CAMP COUNSELOR I/II

    (RECREATION ASSISTANT-Job Code: 9325)

    Camp Counselor I Salary: $19.50 to $20.78 Hourly

    Camp Counselor II Salary: $19.00 to $21.70 Hourly

    Hours: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

    THE POSITION

    The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in summer employment to assist with recreation programs serving youth and teens from 5 to 14 years old. The summer recreation programs are held at various parks and schools throughout the City of Sunnyvale.

    The summer camp program runs June 15 through Aug. 7, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Mandatory Camp Staff Training runs Monday, June 8 - Friday, June 12.

    Essential Job Functions

    (May include, but are not limited to, the following):
    • Organize and lead recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports and games
    • Supervise participants, teen volunteers, field trips, swim days, special events and all activities conducted in program
    • Take attendance, and assist with record-keeping
    • Issue, maintain and store equipment and supplies
    • Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers and City staff
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants and teen volunteers
    • Attend staff meetings
    • Prepared to be loud, excited, outgoing and energetic as you lead kids in activities
    • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision or in a team with other staff
    • Must complete mandatory training hours by attending scheduled trainings or must get approval to arrange alternative training dates
    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

    Camp Counselor I

    • Minimum age is 16 years old


    Camp Counselor II
    • Minimum age is 17 Years old
    • One (1) year or season of experience working with youth in a recreation setting

    Licenses/Certifications: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C CA driver's license and a safe driving record OR the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Farsi
    • College courses in education, social service, recreation, human services or related majors
    • Experience interacting with the public
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
    • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision or in a team with other staff
    • Experience working directly with the public in a recreation or education setting
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook)
