Consider joining the team of Sierra Nevada Regional Department of Child Support Services as a Human Services Specialist Trainee. This is an entry level position in which the individual performs routine duties related to laws and regulations pertaining to the establishment and enforcement of child support obligations. Employees at this level are expected to manage a gradually increasing caseload under close supervision.
Other vital duties include: - Perform interactive interviews to elicit information necessary to establish and/or enforce child support obligations.
- Explain laws, regulations, rules, and policies to customers and apprise them of their rights, complaint resolution process, and responsibilities.
- Ensure accuracy and completion of applicable applications, declaration forms, agreements, and legal documents.
- Use a variety of methods, systems, and procedures for locating information and resolve discrepancies by securing documentation, assets, income, liabilities, medical records, and confirmation from other agencies.
- Organize caseload so that necessary case records and documents are processed and updated within specific time limits established by regulation and state, federal, and local policy.
- Coordinate and/or conduct genetic tests and analyze information for the establishment of parental relationships.
- Prepare, process, and/or file correspondence, reports, and legal forms and conduct service of process actions as necessary.
- Confer with workers regarding discrepancies in the systems.

Trainees are required to:
- Enroll in an accredited college upon hire
- Complete 12 semester units within the first academic year, and
- Complete an associate or bachelor’s degree within three academic years from the date of hire
This pathway offers an opportunity for individuals without a degree to receive hands-on experience, gain foundational knowledge in the field, and advance to the Human Services Specialist classification upon successful completion of the educational requirements.

Education and Experience RequiredGraduation from high school/possession of GED certificate or high school proficiency certificate AND six months of clerical experience that includes substantial public contact OR completion of fifteen (15) credits in social services, sociology, social work, psychology, behavioral science, business, public administration or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Completion of twelve (12) credits within one academic year (two semesters) following the date of hire.
Completion of an associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university within three academic years (six semesters) following the date of hire.
