    Under general supervision performs a variety of routine semi-skilled tasks involved with the repair and maintenance of a diverse automotive and diesel-powered fleet.
    This is the trained entry-level classification in the fleet equipment maintenance and repair series. The Fleet Equipment Technician I is expected to become proficient in performing semi-skilled routine maintenance tasks on small engines and automotive/diesel equipment with minimal supervision. As they acquire additional training and experience, incumbents in this class are expected to learn and to assist with performing more complex automotive and diesel repairs. The Fleet Equipment Technician I is distinguished from the next higher class of Fleet Equipment Technician II in that the latter performs complex repair and maintenance tasks independently and at the full journey level.
    The department currently has (4) open vacancies in the Parks, Fleets, and Facilities division.


    Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

    Performs routine maintenance on automotive and/or diesel equipment. Lubricates, changes fluids, and filters. Replaces batteries, belts, and lights. Performs minor tune-ups. Services and repairs small engines and city maintenance equipment, including mowers and leaf blowers. Climbs on, under, and inside automotive and heavy equipment. Makes service calls. Repairs and replaces tires. Inspects and renews brakes. Performs light welding. Drives and test drives automotive and/or heavy equipment, as assigned. Orders parts. Operates a computer to maintain equipment and repair records. Performs other related functions as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    One year of experience in automotive repair in a paid employee status and completion of a one-year basic automotive technician training program from an accredited college or trade school, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following desirable knowledge, skills and/or abilities: Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Basic Knowledge of: operating principles of automotive/diesel equipment and small internal combustion engines; safety practices as applied to automotive/diesel repair.
    • Working knowledge of: Service requirements and general techniques of preventative maintenance of small engines and automotive/diesel powered equipment.
    • Ability to: perform routine service maintenance, including lubrication, of automotive and diesel equipment; learn to perform proper procedures and techniques related to the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a large, diverse fleet; climb on and safely operate a variety of automotive and heavy equipment, as assigned; operate a computer to maintain equipment and repair records; establish effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of other departments.
    Special Requirements
    • Must possess a basic set of mechanic hand tools in a rollaway toolbox.
    • Possession and retention of a valid California Class “C” Driver's License is a condition of continued employment in this classification.
    • Possession and retention of a valid California Class “A” or “B” Driver’s License is required by the end of the probationary period and is a condition of continued employment in this classification.
    • Must be willing to work any shift, weekends, and to be on call on off-duty hours.
    • Must be able to climb on, under, and inside large equipment.
    • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 60 lbs.

    Applications will be reviewed by the Human Resources Department. Those applicants possessing the most pertinent qualifications will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include: Performance Examination (Weight of 40%) Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday February 24, 2026: which may include a demonstration of skill in the operation of tools and equipment in fleet maintenance and repair.

    Oral Interview Examination (Weight of 60%) Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2026 : will evaluate the candidates' experience, training, education, and abilities in relation to those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job. Candidates need a minimum passing score in order to be placed on the eligible list. Candidates must achieve a passing score in every component of the selection process in order to be placed on the eligible list. The Human Resources Department may waive one or more examination components. When one weighted examination component is waived, the remaining section will receive a weight of 100%.
