    Position Summary

    Position Summary:

    Integrates clinical findings, laboratory results and other diagnostic tests to determine the presence of infections utilizing the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control; promotes staff adherence with Infection Control processes and policies via education and training and ensures compliance with hospital's medical staff by-laws, rules and regulations, policies and regulatory standards. Serves as a clinical resource to improve patient outcomes.

    Job Requirement

    Education/Experience:
    Equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in nursing, epidemiology, microbiology, infectious disease or medical technology or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in an acute care setting, or Infection Control, basic understanding of epidemiological and statistical methods.

    Licensing/Certification Requirements:
    Certification in Infection Control required or ability to sit for a Certification in Infection Control within two (2) years after hire date. Failure to obtain and/or maintain licensure/certification will result in termination of employment.

    Additional Position Requirements

    • A minimum of two (2) years of recent (within last 5 years), documented acute care experience
    Preferences will be given to applicants who document the following:
    • Current Certificate in Infection Control (CIC)


    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

    Knowledge of:
    Basic principles of biology and microbiology, anatomy and physiology; infectious disease etiology and intervention methods; risk factors associated with infectious disease; standards of care; disease process; medical equipment; plan development; evaluation and assessment techniques; how to use general office equipment including, but not limited to: facsimiles, copiers, telephones and computers; pharmacology and medication administration; Nurse Practice Act (as appropriate); department and hospital safety practice and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

    Skill in:
    Anatomy; ability to analyze laboratory results, including infection and disease control measures; basic medical technology; calculate basic statistical measures such as rates, averages, medians, standard deviation, confidence intervals and to plot data on graphs; interpret and analyze the significance of medical, health and other data obtained from a variety of sources; developing and implementing education programs associated with specialty; maintain confidentiality; organizing, prioritizing and delegating work; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
    Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, including stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, and strength to examine and treat varied patients, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
