    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 1 - Building Trades Unit

    Contra Costa County Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill one Painter vacancy in the Public Works Facilities Maintenance Division. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

    Under general supervision, to perform skilled work in preparing surfaces for finishing or refinishing, mixing, matching and applying a variety of paints and paint products to the interior and exterior of buildings, equipment, furniture and machinery; and to do related work as required.

    The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Following established safety rules and regulations and maintaining a safe and clean environment
    • Prepare walls, ceilings, and other surfaces for painting by scraping, pressure washing, using sandpaper to remove old paint
    • Filling cracks and holes in walls with putty and caulk
    • Tape, texture and repair damaged sheetrock (wallboard)
    • Applying paint, stain, and other finishes to surfaces using paint brushes, pressure washing, rollers or sprayers
    • Prepare and apply wood stain finish to cabinets, doors, and frames
    • Prepare and apply epoxy floor coatings
    • Make on-site preparations such as building scaffolding, covering fixtures etc.
    • Communicating with clients to determine their painting needs; also helping them with their decisions for their painting projects
    • Completing work requests thoroughly and professionally, includes project notes and labor charges on all work requests; responding to work requests in a timely and efficient manner

    • You may be asked to perform work in various weather conditions

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.

    Experience: Either 1) Completion of an apprenticeship as a painter and one (1) year of full-time or its equivalent journey level experience; OR 2) Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent experience in painting activities to include: preparation of surfaces; application of wall coverings and paint products; repair and maintenance of both inside and outside finished surfaces; erection and use of scaffolding. One (1) year of the above experience must have been at the journey level.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Ability to operate spray equipment
    • Experience with fabricating containment areas
    • Experience mixing and matching paint
    • Experience working with paint, stain and other finishes based on job specifications


    Selection Process

    Application filing and evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application. Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.Online Multiple Choice Examination: A multiple choice examination will be conducted to measures candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to: professional and technical expertise, safety focus, communication, and decision making. (Weighted 30%) Performance Examination:A performance examination will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Painter classification. These may include but are not limited to: professional & technical expertise, delivering results, general physical ability, manual dexterity, safety focus, and listening. (Weighted 70%) Department Hiring Interviews: To be scheduled once eligible list is established.

    The Written Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place in February 2026.
    The Performance Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place in March 2026.



    The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
