Athletics Gardener
(Gardener) INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY Compensation and Benefits Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $3,596 - $3,893 per month (Internal employees may be placed at a salary higher than the anticipated range as required by the collective bargaining agreement.)
Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,596 - $5,035 per month
- This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.
- Area of consideration is limited to on-campus, state funded employees only.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary Under general supervision, performs skilled horticultural work in specialized planting areas and ornamental gardens on campus for a major portion of time. Related assignments may include mowing, irrigation repairs, tool and equipment maintenance. Typically performs specialized gardening functions on the campus grounds, landscape features and parking lots to assure proper maintenance to align with department and university mission. May perform general grounds maintains in support of the department and other duties as assigned. This position may require after-hours and weekend work.
Key Qualifications - Knowledge of:
- Thorough knowledge of the names, characteristics, and use of trees, shrubs and flowers; proper use and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment; flower and plant propagation techniques, pruning techniques, characteristics of fertilizers, soil conditioners, soils, and the effects of environment on plant life. Knowledge of drought-tolerant plant varieties.
- Knowledge of plant pests, diseases and nutritional deficiencies.
- Skill/Ability to:
- Skills and abilities to care for and maintain plants in all stages of growth; develop and execute an ornamental planting program; mix soils and fertilizers for plantings; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and promote a positive, service oriented collegial work environment with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License, with a good driving record.

Education and Experience - Two years of experience in the cultivation and care of ornamental plants including planting, watering, fertilizing, transplanting, and pruning.
- Specialized skills in planting and cultivating planting areas and ornamental gardens throughout the campus landscapes.
- Requires skills in pruning and caring for all ornamental plants, shrubs and trees especially in an Arboretum setting.
- Preferred Skills:
- Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas in an institution setting.
- Four years of experience in the cultivation and care of ornamental plants and large landscapes.
- Experience in a full range of horticultural work on performance turf and play fields or golf courses.
- Knowledge of Mountain West Conference and NCAA regulations and standards regarding the setup and marking of athletic fields for games.
- Knowledge of or ability to understand how to re-sod, re-grade, aerate, and topdress athletic fields.
