Houston Public Library is seeking an energetic, self-motivated, innovative and collaborative collection development librarian to provide leadership and vision for acquisitions and processing within the Library Materials Services unit for a large urban public library system consisting of 42 locations and serving a diverse set of communities and populations. Must be able to think “outside-of-the-box” and embrace change and technology in developing and executing a collection development plan and strategy for a progressive library system for the 21 st century. Able to pay attention to details while having a system-wide view. Must be highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as Office 365.
Essential job duties and responsibilities include:
- Lead the development and ongoing evaluation of acquisitions and processing for the Library Materials Services Division
- Manage the budget and expenditures to ensure funds are expended appropriately
- Oversee scheduling of inventories at branch locations
- Review, evaluate and update division procedures.
- Assist with budget projections for library collections to ensure the effective management of library materials funds.
- Interact with outside vendors to assure that Division goals are being met
- Effectively lead projects that involve staff from across the organization.
- Implement effective workflows and work collaboratively with other units
- Participate in library system-wide planning, committees, and working groups.
- Engage in professional organizations to keep abreast of library trends
- Work in a dynamic environment with frequently changing priorities.
- Plan and work effectively to meet timelines and deadlines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Houston Public Library serves a population of 2.2 million citizens, serving on the nation’s most diverse populations. The Family History Research Center at the Clayton Library Campus is one of three History Research Centers and is part of the Houston Public Library's network of Neighborhood Libraries, Central Library, and TECHLINK libraries.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSMINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSFour (4) years of experience as a librarian are required, including at least one (1) year of management experience.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTSA valid driver license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2) preferred.
PREFERENCESPreference shall be given to applicants with:
- Experience managing a research center and strong supervisory skills.
- Project management experience especially in the areas of digitization, conservation, or grant-funded projects.
- Working experience in an archives, special collection, museum, or research center.
- Familiarity with local history collections, particularly Houston and Texas.
- Experience in records or documents management; creating policies and procedures; or strategic planning or succession planning.
- Strong problem solving and organization skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) Certification or Records Management Certification.
