    Position: Associate Vice President, Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED)
    Effective Date: On or about July 1, 2026
    Classification: Administrator IV
    Salary Range: The anticipated hiring range is $192,000.00 -$202,208.00/per year. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
    Reports To: Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

    The Associate Vice President (AVP) for the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) at California State University, Long Beach, is a leadership position responsible for providing strategic vision, oversight, and management of the University's research mission. Reporting directly to the Provost, the AVP plays a crucial role in shaping the research agenda, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving initiatives that contribute to regional and national research priorities.

    Those reporting to and working with the AVP include the Senior Director of Sponsored Programs, the Director of Research Integrity and Compliance, the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research Services, and Director of Innovation and Economic Development.

    The AVP should have a deep understanding of the complexity of the research enterprise, with a commitment to support all types of research, scholarly and creative activities across the campus and provide equitable and just access to research opportunities in the physical sciences, social sciences, health sciences, arts and humanities. An appreciation for the value of advancing the University’s research mission through innovation, interdisciplinarity, and different perspectives, approaches and methods is also important.

    Required Qualifications
    • Earned doctorate, with university teaching experience, service, and a record of scholarly and creative activities equivalent to a tenured, full professor faculty appointment in one of the departments of the university.
    • Increasingly responsible leadership and research experience in higher education, with an established track record of facilitating publications, grant work, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
    • Experience in supporting diverse types of research across disciplines and promoting involvement of diverse students, including a track record of implementing research programs that recruit and retain first-generation and low-income students.
    • Demonstrated strong leadership and management skills, including budget oversight and strategic planning. Experience in research compliance, commercialization, and/or economic development.
    • Evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to engage effectively with stakeholders both internally and externally
    • Evidence of experience in promoting equity, inclusion, and belonging through research initiatives/community collaborations.
    • Demonstrated active involvement in shared governance

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Proven track record of securing external research funding and managing grants and contracts effectively
    • Demonstrated experience in advancing faculty and student research, scholarly and creative activities
    • Demonstrated experience in fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion within research, innovation, and economic development initiatives
    • Demonstrated leadership in creating research internal grant programs to advance strategic priorities of the university
    • Experience in the California State University (CSU) system with extensive knowledge of the CSU research enterprise
    • Evidence of cultural competence and experience collaborating with individuals from different cultural backgrounds
    • Knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in research and innovation management
    • Strategic vision and the ability to develop and implement initiatives that advance the institution’s research and innovation goals

    Responsibilities:

    Strategic Vision and Leadership
    • Provide leadership, oversight, and vision for all aspects of the University's research endeavors
    • Contribute to the development of a strategic vision for promoting interdisciplinary research, integrating research and education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and allocating resources for research priorities
    • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and address grand challenges for the regional workforce and economic development
    • Supports reciprocal partnerships with community and city agencies to co-identify research needs and opportunities
    • Collaborate with the President, Provost, and Deans to determine budgetary priorities aligned with the research strategic plan

    Research Administration
    • Oversee the ORED and university research operations
    • Foster new research initiatives and oversee internal research funding allocation
    • Provide oversight of research centers and institutes

    Compliance and Integrity
    • Provide campus-wide leadership in research integrity and compliance
    • Oversee research compliance and safety, including human subject research, animal care, biosafety, and import/export controls
    • Investigate and report scientific research misconduct

    Student Research and Engagement
    • Sustain the culture of student research by overseeing the Office of Undergraduate Research Services
    • Coordinate and support on- and off-campus research opportunities for students
    • Plan and institutionalize events like the Student Research Competition and the Week of Research

    Innovation, Industry Partnerships, Community-Focused Partnerships, and Economic Development
    • Serve as a campus liaison for community-focused partnerships, industry partnerships and economic development
    • Serve as representative on the President’s Commission on Economic and Workforce Development
    • Represent and lead the university on regional projects for the public good
    • Provide oversight of the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the development of public-private partnerships
    • Foster innovation and manage intellectual property recommendations
    • Facilitate university-industry research partnerships, encouraging an exchange of knowledge and expertise
    • Support innovation and commercialization, protecting intellectual property
    • Identify and connect faculty and students with industry partners and external grants
    • Serve as a member on the President’s Commission on Economic and Workforce Development
