    About the Position:

    The Office of the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) plans and manages all academic and instructional resources that support the teaching, scholarship, and research mission of Cal State Fullerton. The office strives to serve as a central resource for the campus community, ensuring quality academic programming and fostering partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders to promote and support faculty and student success. The Office of the Provost achieves this by empowering faculty, staff, administrators, and students with the knowledge and support necessary so that we can each carry out our individual roles in fulfilling our university’s mission. We seek an exceptional individual to join our Operations team as the NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Repatriation Project Specialist (Administrative Analyst/Specialist Exempt I). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

    Under the general direction of the University’s CalNAGPRA Repatriation Coordinator, the Repatriation Project Specialist will support the process of fulfilling CSUF’s NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA compliance responsibilities. The NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Repatriation Project Specialist will assist the CalNAGPRA Repatriation Coordinator with all tasks required to complete expeditious repatriation of Native American ancestral remains and cultural items housed at CSUF in a manner respectful of Tribal sovereignty and cultural practices. Conducting in-depth review on university collections and prepare complete and accurate summaries of relevant information for use in consultation including reviewing, analyzing, and synthesizing available data from scientific, anthropological, historic, and traditional forms of knowledge to inform cultural affiliation determinations. Reconstructing and documenting provenance and provenience of collection items when records are incomplete. Assisting in fulfilling records requests including ensuring accurate accounting of documents and scanning archival documentation to increase accessibility when relevant. Other duties as assigned.

    Essential Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving the study, analysis, evaluation, development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs plus two years of related experience.

    Working knowledge of and the ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations. Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program or administrative specialty. Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques. Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skilled in research, development, and evaluation of policies and programs. Ability to collect, evaluate, and interpret data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Expertise investigating and analyzing problems with broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form. Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor or master’s degree in Anthropology, Native American Studies, Museum Studies, or a related field. Direct experience working on NAGPRA compliance may substitute in lieu of a degree. Experience working with archaeological methods and archaeological collections. Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential issues and act with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.

    Knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) (25 U.S.C. § 3001-13) legislation and its implementing regulations (43 C.F.R. § 10.1-.17) as well as CalNAGPRA legislation (AB 275). Willingness to respect and defer to Tribal preferences and guidance regarding respectfully handling sensitive cultural items. Excellent research, writing, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to establish goals, workload priorities, and to follow through to successful completion. Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and effectively on many projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed, accurate, and orderly records. Experience using Collection Space (Cspace) or other museum databases.

    Knowledge of acceptable museum practices and standards for collections care, collections management, and documentation methods for collections. Experience working in cultural resources management and knowledge of standard archaeological field practices and documentation. Experience working with archival records. Ability to draft maps and analyze spatial associations in ArcGIS Pro.

    License/Certifications

    A valid California driver’s license.
