    The San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with an expected start in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. The position is expected to contribute to interdisciplinary AI initiatives across SDSU and will receive an academic appointment in either the Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Management Information Systems department depending on the candidate's academic training and expertise.     SDSU is an R1 institution integrating AI into education, research, and our community. SDSU hosts the James Silberrad Brown Center for Artificial Intelligence, and has invested in significant AI infrastructure in support of advanced AI and ML research and education. Current focus areas include foundational AI, social robotics, social media analysis, homeland security, and healthcare innovation. Qualified applicants will have demonstrated expertise in multimodal AI systems, generative AI, explainable and interpretable AI, foundation models and large language models, agentic AI and multi-expert reasoning, intelligent physics-based systems, or edge AI. This interdisciplinary AI position is expected to contribute to SDSU’s AI-forward strategic plan across the university.

    Qualifications

    Required qualifications by date of application
    • A record of original research / scholarly accomplishments and demonstrated capacity to
      • Develop a vigorous and independent program of research and scholarship in multimodal AI systems, generative AI, explainable and interpretable AI, foundation models and large language models, agentic AI and multi-expert reasoning, intelligent physics-based systems, or edge AI.
      • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses;
    • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria .

    Required qualifications by date of hire
    • Terminal PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related field, with all degree requirements met.

    Preferred qualifications:
    • Strong technical and theoretical understanding of AI systems, algorithms, and models
    • Experience in practical application of AI to cross-disciplinary domains
    • Record of publications, presentations, and/or funding
    • Potential for securing extramural funding
    • Preparation for teaching students from diverse backgrounds

    The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
