    Job Description:

    Training Specialist

    Purpose:

    Coordinates training activities to include development of curriculum and delivery of job specific training to meet departmental initiatives.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Surveys various training techniques, materials, and commercial offerings to select the most appropriate process for the delivery of training.
    • Delivers targeted, audience-appropriate instructor-led training sessions.
    • Coordinates student and facility schedules for delivery of training, and maintains and prepares appropriate records of participation.
    • Develops written training materials, visual aids, and reference materials, including course curriculums.
    • Performs preproduction, production, and postproduction work on computer- and video- training materials that use computer and streaming audio-visual technologies for on-demand use.
    • Develops and administers assessments of staff skills for use in developing training strategies and curriculum, and effectiveness of delivery.
    • Conducts research or surveys to determine the effectiveness of training provided.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years of experience in a technical training environment.
    • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • Licensing for specific disciplines may be required.

    Position Overview:

    Austin Aviation is seeking a dynamic Training Specialist to lead initiatives that strengthen workforce capability, ensure compliance with training standards, and drive continuous improvement across the organization. In this role, the specialist creates and maintains a positive, organized classroom environment where employees remain engaged, focused, and motivated to learn. Strong classroom management is central to ensuring that training sessions run smoothly, participants feel supported, and learning objectives are consistently achieved. Beyond the classroom, the specialist develops and updates training content, facilitates workshops, and adapts programs to meet the evolving needs of the organization. They work closely with managers and subject matter experts to identify skill gaps, track compliance with regulatory requirements, and provide coaching that fosters professional growth. Because the Aviation Department operates in a dynamic environment, flexibility is essential; the specialist must tailor training schedules and delivery methods to align with operational demands, ensuring that all employees have access to meaningful development opportunities. On a daily basis, the specialist will deliver engaging classroom training sessions, facilitate workshops, and provide hands‑on instruction that equips employees with the skills needed to succeed in their roles. They will monitor and track training compliance requirements, maintain accurate records to support audits and reporting, and design training materials and digital resources tailored to diverse learning needs. Trainers in this role are expected to collaborate closely with managers and subject matter experts to identify skill gaps, adapt programs to meet evolving operational demands, and ensure that training schedules remain flexible to accommodate the needs of the organization. In addition, the specialist will provide coaching and guidance to employees and leaders, fostering professional growth and performance improvement, while developing interactive online modules and blended learning programs that expand accessibility and reinforce knowledge retention.

    The ideal candidate for the Training Specialist role will demonstrate proven expertise in instructional design and delivery, classroom management, and learner engagement, with the ability to create an motivating environment that supports diverse learning styles. They will have a strong background in developing and delivering training content across multiple formats, including workshops, hands‑on instruction, and innovative eLearning design, ensuring that employees remain engaged and equipped with the skills needed to succeed. Success in this role requires excellent collaboration skills, as the specialist must work well with others, support colleagues, and remain open to idea sharing in order to build effective training solutions that meet organizational needs. The candidate should also bring experience in tracking and maintaining compliance, designing digital resources tailored to operational demands, and adapting programs to address evolving skill gaps. Flexibility, creativity, and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential, along with the ability to coach employees and leaders to foster professional growth and performance excellence.

    Assessment:

    A skills assessment will be required for this position.

    Salary Range:

    $28.76 - $35.59 per hour

    Travel:

    This position requires traveling to multiple sites as part of the regular job duties. A driving record verification will be conducted. If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    8:00 AM-5:00 PM

    Hours may change according to departmental needs; work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekend work.

    City Government
