Assistant City Engineer in the
Public Works and Utilities Department. The Assistant City Engineer, while reporting to the City Engineer, administers and oversees several staff members and functions of the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Typical areas of involvement, expertise, and oversight for this position are in: engineering development review and permitting, parking, traffic, and circulation, NPDES program compliance and oversight, utility coordination, storm drain planning, and pavement management.

QualificationsAny combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
Education : Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
Experience : Five years of professional civil engineering experience including review of private developments, issuance of public works permits, and design and construction contract administration of public works projects is required, along with at least two years of supervising professional engineering staff. Experience in traffic engineering and/or development review is desirable.
License/Certificate Requirements : A valid Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering issued by the State of California must be obtained prior to appointment and maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Department: The City of Laguna Beach Public Works Department is organized under the Director of Public Works & Utilities and is subdivided into multiple divisions. Divisions include Engineering, which oversees capital improvements, development review, permitting, NPDES compliance, parking, traffic, and circulation, pavement management, utility undergrounding, and coordination with other agencies; Public Services, which handles upkeep of streets, sidewalks, city buildings, parks, beaches, landscaping, city vehicles and emergency repairs; Wastewater, which handles collection and conveyance of wastewater and maintenance of the wastewater system; Administrative Services, which handles budgeting, solid waste and general administrative functions.
The Assistant City Engineer works in the Engineering Division under the direct supervision of the City Engineer. Duties will include managing engineering staff, development review, permitting, NPDES compliance, pavement management, and parking, traffic, and circulation throughout the City. They will also be assigned to manage various capital improvement projects (slurry seal, safety, drainage, sidewalks, storm-drain systems).
