Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. WHAT DOES STATIONARY ENGINEER HELPERS DO? Performs semi-skilled work assisting a journey or higher-level stationary engineer in the operation, maintenance, and repair of stationary plant equipment providing heat, ventilation, power, refrigeration, or air conditioning.
Essential Job FunctionsAssists journey level stationary engineers in the operation, maintenance, and repair of high or low-pressure boilers or high temperature hot water boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Maintains routine service records and logs.
Maintains plant facilities in a clean and orderly condition.
Service, maintain, and operate pumps, motors, boilers, turbines, cooling towers, refrigeration equipment, and other associated power plant equipment.
Briefly watch boiler fires, maintaining proper pressure, temperatures, water levels, etc., and assist in fuel changeover.
Operates, cleans, services, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to a variety of stationary plant equipment such as water heaters and softeners, pumps, compressors, fans, electric motors, and gasoline or diesel stationary engines.
Makes routine inspection tours to check operation and condition of equipment such as brine circulating systems, reservoirs, pumps, temperature and pressure controls, and water and steam lines.
Operates ice-making equipment, removes ice from cans, stacks and stores ice.
Requirements REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY: One (1) year's experience assisting in the operation and maintenance or repair of mechanical or electrical equipment used for providing heat, ventilation, power, refrigeration or air conditioning, or in the repair of electrical, gasoline, or diesel-powered equipment.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds .
DESIRABLE QUALIFICAITONS Credit will be given to applicant who possess the following desirable qualifications.
- Completion of a recognized* steam engineer's program or completion of a steam operation maintenance apprenticeship program.
- Any additional experience in excess of the minimum requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: *Recognized training program or apprenticeship program is defined as an approved agency including but not limited to agencies such as Los Angeles Trade Tech and Operating Engineers Local 501.

Additional InformationOUR ASSESSMENT PROCESS:This examination will consist of an Evaluation of Training and Experience and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This evaluation is worth 100% of your total score and assess the Requirements and Desirable Qualifications.
Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this assessment in order to be added to the eligible register.
ELIGIBIILTY and VACANCY INFORMATION:Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the eligible register accordingly.
Applicants who demonstrate that they meet the requirements by responding to the supplemental questions and pass the assessment will be placed on the eligible register in the order their score group for a period of one (1) year. We will use this eligible register to fill vacancies in the Department of Health Services as they occur.
